Rules of the Game-New in 2013

RUNNING CLOCK PROVISIONS

The National Federation’s Football Rules Committee has a provision in the playing rules which permit state associations to adopt a “running clock” when a point differential is attained. This provision is in place for all football playing schools for all levels in Kentucky:

Any time the score differential reaches thirty-six (36) points or more, the following changes will be made regarding rules determining when the clock will be stopped and/or started. In addition, in keeping with the rules that allow for mutual agreement between coaches for period shortening, the running clock may be implemented at any time by mutual agreement of the coaches. Coaches choice may not supersede the automatic provisions with a 36-point differential.

Carter and Cockrill Have Strong Week

(Football Preview, continued from page 1)

Another offensive weapon for the Patriots will be senior wide out Jacob Howard. As a junior, Howard caught 24 passes for 398 yards and four touchdowns.

“We have one of the best playmaker’s I have ever coached in Jacob Howard,” Hood added. “He had a great year last year despite missing three games with a separated shoulder.”

The defensive line is one of AC-S’s biggest question marks.

“Our weakest spot going into the season is the defensive line but we have already come a long way,” Coach Hood admitted. “We had four starters in the defensive line graduate from last year. Junior Clayton Cornwell is the only returning player on the line with any experience at all. Clayton has done a really good job so far and we have had other guys step it up.”

Coach Hood points out that his linebacker unit is solid.

“We feel like our linebackers are our best group as far as depth on defense,” Hood acknowledged. “We have six or seven guys that can play. We will be switching up a lot of people and running a lot of people on and off the field.”

The defensive secondary unit has already taken a hit due to an injury but a pair of experienced players will be asked to pick up the slack---especially in the opening weeks of the year.

“As far as defensive backs, we loss senior returning defensive back Caleb Vernon at a passing tournament to a broken arm,” Coach Hood said. “Hopefully, he’ll be back the second week of the season. We have junior Cainan Cox who is a returning starter and we have senior Gage Link who is our returning starter at safety. We are looking for those guys to lead in Caleb’s absence.”

When asked about his concerns for the year, Coach Hood mentioned depth. Despite a strong roster of over 80 kids---including 30 freshman that join 18 juniors and 18 sophomores----the Patriots are inexperienced. As a result, fans may see more players asked to play on both sides of the scrimmage line.

“My major concern is depth,” Hood said. “We have only 13 seniors and not really a big junior class. We have also been hounded a little by injuries so we hope we are past that. But in some spots, we are thin. There will be more guys that will go both ways. They may not start both ways but several guys will contribute both sides of the ball. Their will to work is already helping us overcome the depth.”

The Patriots open the 45th season of football Saturday, August 24 with their third consecutive appearance in the Rafferty’s Bowl at Western Kentucky University. ACS plays Mercer County with kickoff slated for 5 p.m. at L.T. Smith Stadium.

Senior cheerleaders (left, left to right) Keely Brown, Shea Tomes and Jamie Bagwell were introduced as part of Meet the Patriots Thursday night. Senior Caleb Vernon (right) walks through a tunnel formed by his football teammates as part of the event sponsored by the ACS Quarterback Club. Meet the Patriots featured introductions of players and cheerleaders and a short pep performance by the ACS band. Coach Hood also commented on each player and the upcoming season. ACS opens the season Saturday night (August 24).

Allen County-Scottsville seniors Rachel Carter placed second and Shayna Cockrill finished third in individual play at the District Golf Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Glasgow Country Club.

Carter fired a 38 on the course, finishing in a tie with Emily Alexander from Glasgow High School. Alexander took the individual title after a one hole playoff. Cockrill posted a round of 39 to finish third in the event.

Lady Patriot golfers Carlie Taylor and Emily Crowder had rough rounds Wednesday. Taylor recorded a 47 while Crowder carded a 58 to leave AC-S with a team score of 182, 16 strokes higher than district champion Glasgow (166).

The district golf tournament features players from AC-S, Barren County, Glasgow and Monroe County---the four schools that comprise the 15th District under basketball, baseball, and softball alignment.

Rachel Carter needed two extra holes to edge Ashton Foushee from Glasgow and win individual honors at the Barren County Invitational Saturday at the Barren River State Park Golf Course.

Carter played steady on the front nine yet the experienced senior realized that she needed to step up her game on the course’s final nine holes.

“I finished the front nine two-over par and not putting well at all,’ Carter admitted. “I knew going into the back nine I had to redeem myself with a few birdies.”

Carter’s back nine was highlighted by three brides. Despite a lone bogey, Carter completed the 18 hole course with a 71. Foushee shot a 71 as well which forced the rival golfers into extra holes to decide the individual winner.

“Going into the first playoff hole, I wasn't nervous at all just because of past experience.” Carter explained. “We both bogeyed the first playoff hole. Going into the second playoff hole, I was wore completely out and really wanted to just finish. I had about a 35-40 foot putt for birdie and it lipped out. The girl from Glasgow then three-putted and finished with a bogey.” Overall, the Lady Patriot team placed fourth among the eight teams with a 340 team score. Senior Shayna Cockrill fired an 81 for the Lady Patriots, good enough for ninth among individuals in the event.

Jason “Pancho” Miller-Football and Track

Jason “Pancho” Miller played football for four years and ran track for five years while in the Allen County school system. On the gridiron, Miller became an outstanding running back. In his high school career, Miller rushed for 2,524 yards and scored 35 touchdowns. In 1991, Miller averaged 7.1 yards per carry and rushed for over 100 yards in nine of AC-S’s 12 games with the highlight of the year coming when AC-S won their first-ever playoff game. Miller graduated from AC-S in 1993 and went on to play football at three colleges; West Virginia University , Eastern Kentucky University and Thomas More College. Miller’s hard-work ethic helped earn him a chance to play professional football. He would conclude his football career as a professional football player for two years with the Barcelona Dragons of NFL-Europe. Miller participated in the 1999 World Bowl as a member of the Dragons. In 2000, Miller walked away from the game and entered a business career. He also works with underprivileged youth.

To the left is Todd Gibbs. This picture was taken in March of 1979 moments after the Lady Patriot basketball team had won the 4th Region title. Gibbs served as a manager for the Lady Patriots. He would go on to ACS sports in multiple ways including serving as the broadcast voice of the Lady Patriots in the 1980s and as director of the Lady Invitational of the South from 1988 until his death in 1995 from Cystic Fibrosis. Todd also was a KHSAA referee for several years in the late 1908s and early 1990s.

Lady Patriot

Golf Team

Seniors Madison Williams and Jared Walden led the way as the Patriot golf team won the District Golf Tournament Wednesday afternoon at the Glasgow Country Club.

Williams fired a 41 and Walden posted a 42 to pace AC-S. Sophomore Aidan Rice carded a 44 with junior Thomas Spencer firing a 45. Sixth-grader Owen Stamper notched a 46 on the afternoon. The Patriots had a team score of 172.

“This was one of the highest winning scores I can remember,” noted AC-S golf coach Scott Stamper. “I think the conditions played a factor. The recent rains lengthened the course because the fairways were softer and the wind was blowing for most of the day.”

Coach Stamper pointed out that his players played solid for their nine holes of golf.

“The guys just hung in there and did not do anything crazy,” Coach Stamper said. “They kept playing and never really ran into that one bad hole. We didn't play great, but I am proud of how the guys didn't get down on themselves and let a shot or a missed putt eat at them for the rest of the round.”

The district golf tournament features players from AC-S, Barren County, Glasgow and Monroe County---the four schools that comprise the 15th District under basketball, baseball, and softball alignment.

Patriot Blitz

This newsletter is the weekly/bi-weekly publication highlighting ACSH athletics. Results and story content should be submitted to A.D. Kerry Harwood or Public Relations Coordinator Don Meador.

The Patriot football team opens play Saturday, August 24 at the Rafferty’s Bowl in Bowling Green. Coach Brad Hood has refocused his squad and challenged his 80 players to recommit to doing whatever it takes to achieve a winning season and a return to more than one night of playoff football in November.

“This team is working really hard,” Coach Hood said. “I’ve been really proud of them. We really got after it during our camp and we finished on a great note.”

The Patriots start with 13 seniors on the rosters; Jacob Howard (5’11, 165), Charlie Trapp ( 5’8”, 195), Gage Link (5’10”,165), Wes Cornwell (6’1”, 210), Caleb Vernon (5’10”,185), Tanner Mutter (5’10”,185), Elijah Perea (6’4”.225), Dustin Brown (5’10”,200), Jonathon Phillips (5’11”,195), Jordan Keen, 5’11”,245), Michael Burton (6’0”,245), Gabe Whitney (6’3”,215) and Austin Graves (6’2”,180 ).

“Our seniors have really grown since last year through the weight room and summer conditioning,” Hood explained. “All 13 seniors have come in and I could be more proud of the way they have changed. Some have come from a long way into a leadership role. They are working hard and they expect their teammates to work hard and the seniors are giving their teammates an example of how to work hard. That makes me proud.”

Last year, the Patriots amassed more offensive yards in the air (1587) than on the ground (1223)---a change from years passed when rushing was the principal weapon for AC-S. Regardless if Coach Hood opts to run or pass, the blocking should be solid.

“The great thing about our offense is that we feel like we have one of the best offensive lines we have had in a long time,” Hood noted. “We have seniors Michael Burton, Elisha Perea, Gabe Whitney and Dustin Brown and a junior in Alex Meador. All five have a lot of experience over the last year or two. We have lost senior Jordan Keen to a torn ACL but we had some depth at his position with playing experience.”

The line will be asked to open holes for a backfield that features a mixture of experience and inexperience. Junior Colton Oakes was expected to be under center at the start of the year but the quarterback has been slowed due to an injury. Sophomore Jessie Bow has been taken snaps in practice.

The AC-S backfield will have a returning starter who has the potential to change the face of a game with a single carry. Senior Charlie Trapp is coming off a season in which he rushed for 664 yards on 123 attempts and scored six touchdowns.

“It’s always good to have a back as good and as explosive as Charlie Trapp standing behind the line,” Coach Hood acknowledged. “Charlie’s got two good fullbacks in front of him in Wesley Cornwell and Ty Mutter.”

Cammie Campbell-Basketball and Fastpitch Softball

Cammie Campbell is a 2002 graduate of AC-SH. The shooting guard helped the Lady Patriots to three consecutive regional titles; 1999, 2000, and 2001. The successes included a 2001 Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) state tournament quarter-final appearance, the first time in 22 years AC-S reached the state tournament’s elite eight. She finished her AC-S career with the school record for most points in a game (42) and as the second leading scorer in Lady Patriot basketball history (1,715). Campbell also played softball for the Patriot fastpitch program, helping the 2000 team capture third place honors at the KHSAA state softball tournament. Campbell played two years of college basketball at the University of Evansville before transferring to Western Kentucky University where she completed her basketball career as a Lady Topper. Campbell was an assistant women’s basketball coach at Indiana State University for four years before taking a job in sports management in South Carolina

Warren Cunningham-Basketball and Baseball

Warren Cunningham graduated from AC-S in 1996. The basketball and baseball athlete was a key in the resurgence of Patriot basketball in the mid 1990s. In 1996, Cunningham averaged 18.1 points per game as the Patriots went 29-5 and captured the Fourth Region championship for the first time since 1981. AC-S won their first round state tournament game before being eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual state champion Paintsville. Cunningham was named to the All-State Tournament team, one of only four boys basketball players from Allen County to ever receive the recognition. He finished his AC-S career scoring 1,254 points. Cunningham was also a two-year starter for the baseball team. After graduation, Cunningham signed with the University of North Carolina-Greensboro where he was a four year member of the Spartan basketball team. Cunningham entered the education field after college. He is currently assistant principal and head basketball coach at Barren County High School in Glasgow.

Wayne Hanes-Basketball and Coach

Wayne Hanes graduated from Allen County High School in 1962. The sharp-shooter was part of a program that won 87 of 93 games over the course of the 1960, 1961 and 1962 seasons. The highlight of Hanes’ career came in 1962 when he helped Allen County to their fourth KHSAA state tournament appearance. The Patriots only loss during a 31-1 season was in the state quarter-finals---with the record the best ever by an Allen County basketball team. After signing with Vanderbilt University and spending a year at the Nashville school, Hanes transferred to Delta State was he was a three-time letterman. He entered the education field and returned to Allen County, spending over 33 years in the school system before retiring in 1999. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Hanes coached the James E. Bazzell Middle School girls basketball team for six years and the AC-S Lady Patriot softball team for seven years.
