Simon Kenton Wrestlers and Wrestling Parents/Guardians,

It’s time! The coaching staff is fired up about this upcoming season and we hope you are too. I’m excited about the opportunities that lie before us. We have an accomplished returning core with some outstanding young talent to go with it. The potential is enormous.

Conditioning is currently ongoing with lifting, running, and agilities on Tuesdays and Fridays right after school through 4:15. Athletes should meet in room 149. Coach Peebles also runs a conditioning practice on Thursdays from 7-8:30pm. On Wednesday we have open mats from 6-7:30 pm. This schedule will remain through October 15th, the first day of regular practice for those not participating in fall sports. Once October 15th is here, practice will be Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 6-8:30 pm, and Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:30-4:30pm. This schedule will run through November 3rd when practice will become Monday to Friday at 6-830pm nightly. From January 5th through February 6th we will complete our 2-a-day practices, adding 6-7am. We have a rigorous schedule that requires ample discipline and will quickly turn boys into men.

All forms indicated on the table of contents should be turned in to Coach Gilbert or me as soon as possible. Our body fat test will occur just before Thanksgiving. A $30 athletic fee will go to Simon Kenton. Warm-up orders are still being finalized. Wrestlers will be expected to purchase their own wrestling shoes and head gear.

Wrestling is a tough sport that requires a lot of self-discipline and dedication. Tournaments occur every weekend. Some weekends, both the JV and Varsity may be staying in hotels. Wrestlers must check their weight daily as mandated by both the state and federal wrestling commissions. They must shower at school immediately after practice at school every day in an effort to avoid skin conditions. We will work hard for you but we expect you to work hard for us.

Simon Kenton has one state title, one duals state title, 23 state champions, and 2 All-Americans. Let’s have a great season and continue this tradition of excellence. I am looking forward to a very successful season.

Sincerely,

Coach Steve Kaiser

Simon Kenton

ATHLETIC PROGRAM

DRUG USE PREVENTION POLICY

POLICY:

The Simon Kenton High School Athletic Program has a zero tolerance policy concerning the use of tobacco products, alcohol, illegal drugs, or abuse of legal drugs by any person participating in athletics at Simon Kenton High School.

However, it is recognized that students do sometimes make poor decisions and not allowing them to learn from their mistakes would go against the very mission this school is dedicated to doing. That is to teach students how to be prepared for their future as educated, responsible adults.

Keeping the school mission in mind, the following sanctions will be imposed on any athlete violating the athletic program tobacco, alcohol, or drug policy:

1st OFFENSE: The coach, in consultation with the athletic director, will impose appropriate discipline for the circumstances concerning the violation. This may include dismissal from the team, if warranted.

2nd OFFENSE: Suspension from participation in 10% of the scheduled games, matches, or meets for that sport as determined from the varsity schedule. The athlete may still participate in practices. In addition, the coach will refer the athlete for counseling through the school guidance office.

3rd OFFENSE: The athlete will be dismissed from the team for the remainder of the season. The athlete will be permitted back on the team for the next school year at the coach’s discretion. The athlete may participate in another sport during that school year.

4th OFFENSE: The athlete will be suspended from participation in all Simon Kenton High School Athletic Programs for the remainder of the school year.

I have read and understand the Simon Kenton High School Athletic Program Policy concerning tobacco, alcohol, and drug use by athletes and I am aware of the sanctions imposed if a violation of that policy occurs.

| |FOR WRESTLER BELOW BODY FAT ALLOWANCE |Rev. 11/11 |

KHSAA 2280 EXECUTIVE DRIVE LEXINGTON, KY 40505

The Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) has instituted the Kentucky Wrestling Minimum Weight Program to encourage healthy weight management by interscholastic wrestlers. As part of this program, a minimum weight is established for each wrestler prior to their competitive season. Each wrestler’s body fat and lean body mass is measured by a KHSAA certified skinfold measurer through skinfold measurement or body composition analysis. The standard error for this method is +/- 3% for all weights. A minimum weight is then calculated as 7% body fat for males and 12% for females.

Your patient was assessed during the pre-season as less than 7% body fat (or 12% body fat for females). The athlete is requesting that he/she be allowed to wrestle at his or her present weight (alpha weight). Because this weight is less than 7% (for males) or 12% (for females) body fat, KHSAA guidelines require permission from the athlete’s personal physician. Most adolescents require 5-7% body fat (males) or 10-12% body fat (females) to achieve optimal growth and development. However, there are some adolescents who are naturally lean and develop normally at a lower percentage body fat.

Please evaluate your patient for normal growth and development, paying particular attention to weight fluctuations and his or her growth curve. Based on the patient’s history and your examination, determine if his or her present weight is compatible with normal growth and development and good health and indicate your assessment on the previous page.

The sub-7% male or sub-12% female, who receives clearance, may never wrestler below his/her ALPHA weight class.

This form shall be completed and filed with the KHSAA BEFORE the athlete may wrestle (practice or competition). DEADLINE FOR ASSESSMENT- FIRST VARSITY CONTEST DATE

Note to Providers: Non-contagious lesions do not require treatment prior to return to participation (e.g. eczema, psoriasis, etc.). Please familiarize yourself with NFHS Rules 4-2-3 and 4-2-4 which states:

“ART. 3 . . If a participant is suspected by the referee or coach of having a communicable skin disease or any other condition that makes participation appear inadvisable, the coach shall provide current written documentation as defined by the NFHS or the state associations, from an appropriate health care professional stating that the suspected disease or condition is not communicable and that the athlete’s participation would not be harmful to any opponent. This document shall be furnished at the weigh-in for the dual meet or tournament. The only exception would be if a designated on-site meet physician is present and is able to examine the wrestler prior to or immediately after the weigh-in. Covering a communicable condition shall not be considered acceptable and does not make the wrestler eligible to participate.”

“ART. 4 .. . If a designated on-site meet physician is present, he/she may overrule the diagnosis of the appropriate health care professional signing the medical release form for a wrestler to participate with a particular skin condition.”

“ART. 5 .. . A contestant may have documentation from an appropriate health care professional only indicating a specific condition such as a birthmark or other non-communicable skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema, and that documentation is valid for the duration of the season. It is valid with the understanding that a chronic condition could become secondarily infected and may require re-evaluation.”

Below are some treatment guidelines that suggest MINIMUM TREATMENT before return to wrestling:

Bacterial diseases (impetigo, boils): Oral antibiotic for two days and no drainage, oozing, or moist lesions.

Herpetic Lesions (Simplex, fever blisters/cold sores, Zoster, Gladiatorum): To be considered “non-contagious,” all lesions must be scabbed over with no oozing or discharge and no new lesions should have occurred in the preceding 48 hours. For primary (first episode of Herpes Gladiatorum), wrestlers should be treated and not allowed to compete for a minimum of 10 days. If general body signs and symptoms like fever and swollen lymph nodes are present, that minimum period of treatment should be extended to 14 days. Recurrent outbreaks require a minimum of 120 hours or five full days of oral anti-viral treatment, again so long as no new lesions have developed and all lesions are scabbed over.

Tinea lesions (ringworm scalp, skin): Oral or topical treatment for 72 hours on skin and 14 days on scalp.

Scabies, Head Lice: 24 hours after appropriate topical management.

Conjunctivitis (pink eye): 24 hours of topical or oral medication and no discharge.

Molluscum Contagiosum: 24 hours after curettage.

NOTE TO PROVIDERS: If your examination yields a finding that the wrestler has a contagious skin condition within these rules, no covering of such condition will allow the athlete to wrestle.

TEN COMMANDMENTS FOR PARENTS WITH ATHLETIC CHILDREN

1. Make sure your child knows that, win or lose, scared or heroic, you love him, appreciate his efforts, and are not disappointed in him.

2. Try your best to be completely honest about your child's athletic capabilities, his competitive attitude, sportsmanship, and actual skill level.

3. Be helpful but don't coach them on the way to the rink, pool, field, gym or track or on the way back or at breakfast and so on. It is tough not to, but it is a lot tougher for the child to be inundated with advice, pep talks, and often critical instruction.

4. Teach them to enjoy the thrill of competition, to be "out there trying," to be working to improve their skills and attitudes.

5. Try not to relive your athletic life through your child in a way that creates pressure; you fumbled too, you lost as well as won. You were frightened, you backed off at times, you were not always heroic. Don't pressure him because you lost your pride.

6. Don't compete with the coach. If the coach becomes an authority figure, it will run from enchantment to disenchantment, etc., with your athlete.

7. Don't compare skill, courage or attitudes of your child with other members of the team, at least within his hearing.

8. Get to know the coach so that you can be assured that the philosophy, attitudes, ethics and knowledge are such that you are happy to have your child under his leadership.

9. Always remember that children tend to exaggerate, both when praised and when criticized. Temper your reaction and investigate before overreacting.

10. Make a point of understanding courage and the fact that it is relative. Some of us can climb mountains but are afraid to fight. Some of us will fight but turn to jelly if a bee approaches. Everyone is frightened in certain areas. Explain that courage is not the absence of fear but a means of doing something in spite of fear of discomfort. The job of the parent of an athletic child is a tough one, and it takes a lot of effort to do it well. It is worth all the effort when you hear your youngster say, "My parents helped, I was lucky in this."
