A RESOLUTION honoring the Rockcastle County Lady Rockets ...

A RESOLUTION honoring the Rockcastle County Lady Rockets for winning the 2011 Houchens/Kentucky High School Athletic Association Girls' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament.

WHEREAS, on March 12, 2011, in front of a record crowd of 5,122 at E.A. Diddle Arena in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Rockcastle County Lady Rockets defeated the DuPont Manual Lady Crimsons by a score of 62-60 to win the coveted 2011 Houchens/Kentucky High School Athletic Association Girls' Sweet Sixteen Basketball Tournament; and

WHEREAS, the championship game was a back-and-forth affair that saw DuPont Manual grab a nine-point lead. With the game and its season in the balance, Rockcastle County stormed back behind timely outside shooting and the brilliant play of McDonald's All-American Sara Hammond. With DuPont Manual courageously fighting to send the game into overtime, the Lady Rockets' Angie Lawrence hit the game-winner: an off-balance, floating shot in the lane with 30 seconds to play. Sydney Arvin scored nine points and Michaela Hunter added seven more for the victorious Lady Rockets, who became the first 12th Region team to win a Sweet Sixteen title in 20 years; and

WHEREAS, the victory capped a dominant season for the Lady Rockets. They won 36 games and lost only once, and they did not lose to a team from the Commonwealth of Kentucky. On their way to avenging a close loss to Scott County in the semifinals of the 2010 Houchens/KHSAA Girls' Sweet Sixteen, Rockcastle County became the first team not from Lexington or Louisville to win the state championship in a decade; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Rockets were led by Coach Chrysti Noble, whose 21 years of coaching experience prepared her well for the championship run the 2010-2011 squad would mount. She was ably assisted by Derek Dotson, Ken Mattingly, Jaclyn Cook, and Johnna Abney. Members of the team were Kristin Abney, Sara Adams, Sydney Arvin, Brianna Burdette, Shanlee Burton, Alexis Chasteen, Kadi Cobb, Katie Cowan, Holly Ham, Sara Hammond, Brianna Hansel, Michaela Hunter, Angie Lawrence, Ella McQueary, Emily Miller, Rebekah Ponder, Kayla Reynolds, Hannah Sowder, and Jaclyn White; and

WHEREAS, it is appropriate that this Honorable Body recognize the perseverance, efforts, and accomplishments of this outstanding group of young women, who exemplify the best in dedication and teamwork, and who will forever be remembered in the storied annals of Kentucky high school basketball;

NOW, THEREFORE,
