A RESOLUTION commending the University of Louisville School of Education.

WHEREAS, the University of Louisville has made a commitment to improving its educational program, and in the process, it is achieving national recognition, as evidenced in the fall 1996 report of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education; and

WHEREAS, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education has identified the following categories in which there were only excellent performances at the University of Louisville as: Category I: Design of Professional Education; Category II: Candidates in Professional Education; Category III: Faculty in Professional Education; and Category IV: The Unit for Professional Education; and

WHEREAS, the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education found that the University of Louisville School of Education's collaboration within the faculty and between it and the public schools is "the most comprehensive and effective" they had ever seen, and a program of uncommon stature and excellence among the nation's schools of education; and

WHEREAS, the University of Louisville School of Education has restructured programs, courses, and experiences to reflect the Kentucky Education Reform Act mandate and in so doing, has tied teacher standards to student standards; and

WHEREAS, many professors have changed their delivery of instruction and course requirements to better serve as models for the way in which teachers will be required to work with their pupils, and the use of computers and other technologies to deliver effective instruction is an important component of the restructured program; and

WHEREAS, our system of education is the cornerstone of everything that we value in this great nation, and the University of Louisville School of Education serves as a hallmark of excellence for the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the nation;

NOW, THEREFORE,

Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky:

Section 1. This honorable body is indeed proud to recognize the University of Louisville's School of Education and its dean, Ray Nystrand, for his innovative programs, and he is to be commended for his commitment to academic excellence in accomplishing the educational achievements in the School of Education.

Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of the University of Louisville ranking among the nation's best programs in teacher education, school collaboration and reform, and early childhood development.

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is hereby directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to Ray Nystrand, Dean, University of Louisville School of Education, University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky 40217, and to John Shumaker, President, University of Louisville, 102 Grawemeyer Hall, Louisville, Kentucky 40217, for presentation to the University of Louisville Board of Trustees.
