Basketball Banquets Conclude Season for Patriot and Lady Patriots

(Patriot baseball…from page 1)

Stamper adds that his juniors on the varsity will see action as their skills progress throughout the season.

“The junior class is a mixed bag of experience and lack of experience and guys that can do different things,” Stamper pointed out. “We don’t have a lot of pitching in our junior class but Bradley Hayes will be a big part. He will have three different roles. He will start games, he’ll be a middle guy and he’ll be the back end guy as well. It will depend on the situation. We are also expecting big things out of Garrett Cooper. He’ll be used on the mound and we are looking to get his bat going. He got off to a rough start with his bat last year but he is playing with confidence and we’ll expecting big things.”

Other juniors will contribute defensively and in special situations.

“Ryan Taylor has an opportunity to be the anchor of our defense at the shortstop position,” Stamper said. “He has a strong arm. He will get to balls most people can not get to and he has a strong enough arm to handle that position. Brandon Mesker is one of the hardest working kids I have got so we are going to try and find a spot for him in the outfield. Cainan Cox’s major role for us will be running the bases but he’s been working hard to get some time in the outfield. Spencer Cole is the one kid that has out worked every kid from day one. He is our spark plug so we are going to find a spot for him to play. Right now, he’ll be at third base but we may move him around.”

Sophomores Jarrett Cockrill and Chris Brown are expected to be on the field and provide the Patriots with day-to-day consistent play.

“I have two sophomores that I know will be in the line-up every day in some capacity in Jarrett Cockrill and Chris Brown,” Stamper said. “They are two of our top hitters and pitchers and two of the top defenders. Jarrett and Chris have been with us since eight grade and we are expecting great things out of these guys.”

The remaining varsity roster at this point includes five younger players that are pushing for action.

“We have two freshmen in Devon Peirce and Mason Carter that will be used on the mound,” coach Stamper added. “They have arms that can handle it. We will also three eighth graders in the mix in Chase Wilson, Sheldon Peay and Drew Meador. They are baseball guys that have grown up around the game. These guys have pushed the older guys and are competing for playing time in the varsity lineup. We have guys that are pushing each other and that will make us better.”

Offensively, AC-S has been working on their hitting. Putting the ball in play and plating runs was a weakness last season and one that the coach hopes can be corrected this year.

“Last year was a tough year for us in that we only averaged about three runs a game,” Stamper noted. “It’s hard to win high school baseball scoring just three runs a game. We just didn’t swing the bat well. We have been working on swinging the bat better. We are working on some mental issues more than mechanical, trying to put confidence in what you want to do.”

Once on the bases, expect the Patriots to be active.

“If we can figure out how to get to first base, we’ll be entertaining,” Stamper promised. “I think we can run. We will run, bunt, hit and run. If they would let me steal first base, we would try it. We are going to go. If a guy on first is there for four or five pitches then I have fallen asleep at third. High school baseball is about execution. We will take chances and out pressure on the opponent.”

The Patriots have played solid defensively since their struggles in the early part of the year. Stamper still believes his defensive unit will support whatever pitcher is on the hill.

“Our defense has a chance to be pretty good,” Stamper said. “One of the things we will try and do is an up tempo approach defensively. It will be a pitch, a quick return to the pitcher and another pitch. This should keep our kids on their toes. We are starting to develop some depth on defense. On the infield we have two guys at every spot and five or six guys that can play the outfield.”

ACS is still working on improving their efforts on the hill---using each game as experience for key tournament games in May.

“The best way we can come up with to assure that our pitchers are getting time and thrown into the fire is to spread it out,” Stamper said. “Then come May, we will have a good idea of who works best in the starter role or who best coming out of the bull pen. On paper, it may look like our pitching is a little thin toward the end of the week but I think it’s gonna pay off by May. We will mix our pitching up.”

The Patriots have a busy week with home games against Glasgow on Tuesday and South Warren Thursday. Friday night, ACS faces Bowling Green in a 6 p.m. game at Bowling Green Ball Park before hosting Russellville in a noon game on Saturday at Patriot Field.

The 2014 tennis and track seasons are underway at ACSH. Coach Chelly Taylor-Stamps’s tennis team have competed in several matches while the Patriot and Lady Patriot track squads---coached by Michael Crowder---have participated in one meet to this point. For more information on both tennis and track, please see page 5.

The start of the baseball season has not been without some bumps for the Patriots. ACS stands 5-10 on the year just under a month into the season.

Errors plagued the Patriots as the team’ dropped five of their first six games. ACS lost to Warren Central (13-3), Greenwood (13-4), South Warren (11-4), Hancock County (10-0) and Warren East (9-3) with a 9-8 win over Muhlenberg County mixed in. The Patriots bounced back with wins over Washington County (11-0) and Hart County (7-1) before dropping games to Metcalfe County (8-2) and Russell County (12-1). AC-S fell to logan County (8-3) before posting back-to-back wins over Hart County (9-2) and Monroe County 5-2). AC-S also fell to Whitefield Academy (10-3) last week at Cumberland University in Lebanon Tennessee and dropped an 8-3 game to Warren East on Monday.

“It’s not May,’ coach Scott Stamper said. “It’s still early.”

Stamper remains optimist for a solid season. His team is led by four seniors; Nat Carter, Evan Day, Spencer Napier and Jacob Stewart.

“Our four seniors that have been in our program since they were freshman,” Stamper explained in a preseason interview. “But, this is the first time in a while that we have had a senior class with this least amount of varsity experience. These guys have been fortunate to have been role players in the past few years. We have challenged these players to step up and get things done for us.”

The seniors have the ability and each will be asked to contribute in different ways.

“Nat Carter will anchor our pitching rotation and kind of be the elder statesman of our arms,” Stamper added. “He has the most innings coming back on the mound. Spencer Napier will have two or three different roles. He will pitch for us, he will play the outfield and he will catch. He might even be at first a game or two. Jacob Stewart will be somewhere in the middle of our order and at first base most every day. Evan is our utility guy. He will pitch for us and he may be at second base or third base. He is the kind of kid that you can move around.” (continued on page 2)

(Lady Patriot softball…from page 1)

On the diamond, the three are expected to play huge roles. Skaggs will anchor the infield with her play at shortstop and provide punch in the line-up with her bat.

“Ali will be one of the better shortstops in the region,” Stafford noted. ‘She’s solid at her spot and she can hit the ball.”

Pitchford returns to infield as well---but at a different position from where she’s played in the past. The senior played a ton of first base last year but has been switched to second---at least early in the year until Stafford has more opportunities to set his defense. Pitchford can also play the outfield.

“Having Erica and Ali up the middle for us is a great thing,” Stafford added. “They communicate so well. They are good leaders in those positions.”

Young---whose has signed to play softball next season at Georgetown---anchors offensively. Young puts a big offensive threat into the line-up---evident by her power already displayed this years with homers in both the Elizabethtown tournament and in play at the Bob Jones tournament in Alabama. She added another homer Monday against Russell County.

The younger players on the team have a lot of ability in multiple areas, starting with pitching. Junior Shelby McPherson is a newcomer in the sense that she does not have varsity experience but is a player that has worked extremely hard to give herself the opportunity to be in the pitching mix. Sophomore Autumn Morgan can also pitch after bouncing bad from injury last year.

“Shelby comes in everyday and does everything you ask her to do,” Stafford said. “She works really hard and gives her all. “Autumn has recovered from both shoulder surgery and Tommy John surgery. Autumn is starting to come around. I see some good things out of her.”

Then, two eighth-graders are expected to be in the rotation---Mackenzie Kirby and Kris-Anne Pardue.

“I call them our pups,” Stafford noted. “They come in every day and work hard. They are going to see a bright future in this program. They will be special in this program in the future. Right now, they are seeing an opportunity to step in and help us compete in the region and hopefully get to the state tournament.”

Pitching is vital at the high school level but so is the ability to put the ball in play. Several players will be asked to help provide offense for AC-S this season.

“Kirstein Ogles has a very good bat,” Stafford said. “She hits the ball so well so we have got to find her a place on the field. Right now she has been at first, third and she will probably be in the outfield some. She will also see time behind the plate.”

Ogles will be asked to provide relief for catcher Rylie Whitney. The strategy will give the Patriots a strong one-two catching battery especially during tournament play which may mean multiple games in short periods of time.

“Behind the plate will be freshman Rylie Whitney who was there quite a few games last year as an eighth grader,” Stafford said. “She also hits the ball really well. She has a good future at the high school level and maybe further.”

Sophomore Mallory Marr is expected to see time at first base while sophomore Savanna Wood will see action in left field. Freshman Kalee Skaggs is expected to be in right field and bring a powerful bat to the line-up---evident by her homer earlier this year into the wind in the loss to Warren East. Another player to watch for in the line-up will be eighth-grader Taylor Stamps who’s “probably the fastest player of the team.”

“Savannah and Kalee have been hitting the ball very well,” Stafford noted. “Taylor Stamps is probably the fastest player of the team.”

The team started the season without a key player who saw considerable action last year. Sophomore Carly Wheat is out for medical reasons with her return date unsure at this time.

“Carly would be our starting third baseman,” Stafford said. “She has a little illness going on but hopefully she will be released in a few weeks but we don’t know at this time. She is a core player to this team. She is a hard worker. I tell everybody that if I had ten Carly Wheats on a team , you would be very successful.”

AC-S starts the season with a schedule that has to rank among the toughest in the state. The Patriots---who are ranked 25th in the state in the pre-season poll by the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association---have seven of the top-24 pre-season Kentucky teams. In addition, AC-S will see several top teams in other states during tournament play in Alabama during spring break.

“I think playing the teams we will be playing this year will help us come tournament time,” Stafford said. “I’m hoping that this schedule will help prepare us to take the next step. When you play against the top teams in the state and in the nation, it will make us tougher. It will help us see where we are and where we’ll need to be when it matters. When the district tournament comes around, I want these girls to understand that we are ready to play against anybody.”

Upcoming games will have AC-S traveling to South Warren on April 8, Glasgow on April 10 and hosting Greenwood on April 11. Saturday, April 12, AC-S plays Sacred Heart and Louisville Ballard at Sacred Heart.

“The seniors know what I require them to do,” Stafford added. “It’s to lead these young girls. We have talked with them and they know that I really want them to step up and be more vocal this year. We are going to be playing a lot of sophomore, freshman, and a few eight graders that will need their leadership.” (continued on page 3)
