African-American Heritage Trail takes center stage at Euharlee Historical Society's annual meeting July 13

With the city featuring two sites on the driving tour, Euharlee Historical Society's annual meeting will highlight the Bartow County African-American Heritage Trail July 13. The gathering will feature a presentation by Keep Bartow Beautiful Executive Director Sheri Henshaw on the project's development.

"Sheri Henshaw and Missy Phillips have been working diligently for years with Justice [Robert] Benham, the Bartow County government and other

organizations to preserve these crucial historical sites," said Katie Gobbi, director of the Euharlee Welcome Center & History Museum. "For many years, some of the sites have not been kept up and this project has focused a new attention on all of them.

"Particularly in Euharlee, we have two sites -- the covered bridge and the Black Pioneers Cemetery. Maintenance of any historic site can be difficult, but cemeteries are in need a constant, consistent attention. We are excited to share the progress that has been made over the last six months with the public. We

hope that those in attendance will be motivated by Sheri's presentation to continue supporting this project. The project has helped build bridges between the various historic sites and organizations that we hope will ultimately keep our programs more sustainable and keep up the momentum that has been generated."

Open to the public, the 10 a.m. complimentary gathering will be presented at the Euharlee Welcome Center & History Museum, 33 Covered Bridge Road.

During Henshaw's address, attendees will learn about how

many of the trail sites are receiving significant renovations. Funding for upgrades at seven locations was secured through a Memorandum of Agreement in April 2018 between the Federal Communication Commission, the Georgia State Historic Preservation Officers, Bartow County government, the Bartow County Community Development Department and the Cartersville-Bartow County Convention & Visitors Bureau in regards to four public safety towers.

Kingston woman gets 5 years probation for killing cat

BY JAMES SWIFT james.swift@daily-

A Kingston woman who killed a cat by twisting its neck was sentenced to five years on probation in Bartow Superior Court Tuesday morning.

Anita Deloras Adams entered a negotiated plea of guilty to one count of aggravated cruelty to animals for an incident that occurred on May 24. According to Cherokee Judicial Circuit Senior Assistant District Attorney Sharon M. Fox, another individual residing with Adams obtained two cats to address a rodent problem at the home.

"Adams did not feel like the cats were doing what they should with the rodents, so she picked up one of the cats, wrung its neck and threw it over the fence," Fox said. "Law enforcement was called, the victim was upset ... they did speak to the defendant and she admitted that she wrung the cat's neck and she killed it."

Fox said Adams' behavior when police arrived at the residence was disconcerting.

"Her demeanor at that point in time, in the State's opinion, was comical and did not match the situation of what she had just done," Fox continued. "She's been in jail for little over a month and a half and that's going to tailor into my ultimate recommendation on this case."

The incident has drawn interest from outside of the local community. As of Friday afternoon, an online petition at demanding Adams be prosecuted for aggravated cruelty to animals has garnered more than 3,500 signatures.

Georgia Superior Court Senior Judge Shepherd L. Howell asked the defendant if she had been convicted for a felony before.

"Yes, your honor," the defendant responded. "It was drugs."

Fox said Adams used a conditional discharge for a misdemeanor suspended license case in 2014, but she nonetheless remains eligible for Georgia First Offender Act treatment.

"First Offender treatment will give you the chance to do your sentence on probation, and if you do so successfully, you will be discharged without a conviction,"

Cass High School graduate earns superior rating at thespian festival

BY DONNA HARRIS donna.harris@daily-

A group of Cass High theater students made a good showing at a national theater competition last week.

Six young actors earned the right to compete in the individual events at the weeklong International Thespian Festival at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln by receiving superior ratings at the Georgia Thespian Conference in February.

The international festival is a weeklong immersion in the theater arts specially designed for high-achieving middle and high school drama students who are members of the International Thespian Society as well as their teachers.

Recent graduate Grace Weeks received a superior medal in the Solo Acting Performance IE while group members Anna Boughton, Max McCauley, Andrew Pitts, Tyler Rawlins and Austin Williams fell just short of the highest rating in the Group Acting Performance IE.

"In competition, performers must get superior scores from all judges in the panel of three to receive an overall superior in the competition," CHS Theater Director Chris Agan said. "Grace received superior scores from all three judges and won a superior medal. The group received a perfect score from one judge and a superior score from another, but the third judge gave them a 17, which is in the excellence range, putting them out of medal contention."

Agan said he was ecstatic about Grace's performance and accomplish-

ment. "She has worked so hard for all four

years of high school to get to the national level of performance, and it was overwhelming to see her dedication finally pay off," he said.

Weeks, who received the highest score she could receive, was thrilled about the ratings she got for her two contrasting monologues, one from "Sister Mary Ignatius Explains It All For You" by Christopher Durang and one from "Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead" by Burt V. Royal.

"It's an honor to be scored so high-

ly at an international event, especially when competing against a large number of talented thespians from all over the United States as well as the world, and all [were] in attendance because they themselves earned the right to compete by scoring a superior rating at their state conference," she said. "The number of participants for just solo monologues were five pages long. It reminded me of how wonderful it feels to see all of my hard work pay off."

Weeks, 18, said she was "very proud" of her performance at nationals.

Adairsville HS Construction students place in Top 10 at SkillsUSA nationals

BY DONNA HARRIS donna.harris@daily-

Adairsville High School's construction students extended their Top 10 streak at the national SkillsUSA Championships last week.

The four-member TeamWorks team -- recent graduate Hamilton Noggle, plumbing; rising senior Andrew Bearden, carpentry; recent graduate Shyann Bailey, electrical; and rising senior Vidal Diaz-Sandavol, masonry --finished in fourth place in the country while rising sophomore plumber Connor Bennett ended up in eighth place at the 55th annual National Leadership and Skills Conference in Louisville, Kentucky.

The national-level competition for public high school and college/post-secondary technical students is organized by SkillsUSA, a national organization for students enrolled in training programs in technical, skilled and service occupations like plumbing, computer-aided drafting, precision machining, automotive service technology and broadcast news production.

During conference week, more than 6,400 outstanding career and technical education students -- all gold-medal state winners -- showcased their skills by competing in 103 different hands-on contests in trade, technical and leadership fields. The top students were awarded gold, silver and bronze medallions.

"Once I started performing, I was initially nervous, but as I felt myself flow into the minds of my characters, I calmed down and just did my best to deliver a performance I could be proud of for myself and my school," she said. "Theater is such a beautiful art, that through your characterization, movements and voice, you hope to convey emotions that make your audience feel something, to draw them in by making your character believable. I felt I was able to do this with my performance, and I was incredibly proud of my differentiation of characters as well as my ability to act through more mature content that was in my dramatic piece."

Agan also was proud of the group's performance of its piece "Blue Horses," which was up against 34 other Group Acting entries from across the country.

"Overall, while I would've loved to see the group receive superior scores, I am incredibly proud of their hard work and performance, and I accept the judges' criticisms and scores," he said. "They did an amazing job, and their performance was incredible to see."

The group originally qualified for nationals with 10 members, but only half of them were able to make it to Nebraska.

"The rules state that the piece has to remain unchanged from the state qualifying performance," Agan said. "Only five members of the group attended nationals so they had to redistribute lines but maintain the same movement and blocking, making the nationals performance much more difficult."

This was the second year that theater students from Cass were fortunate enough to qualify for nationals, "and it has been an honor both of those times," Agan said.

"It has been a goal for me to get students to this level of performance and recognition since I began working at Cass 13 years ago," he said. "I am amazed by the ability and skill of our students at Cass High, and I am looking forward to many more years of success to shine a spotlight on our kids."

Weeks said this was the first time she'd competed in an individual event at nationals, but it was the second year she participated in the conference, which showcases outstanding school theater productions; offers rigorous workshops taught by experts in the fields of acting and performing, lighting, sets, sound, makeup, costume design and construction, directing, stage management, dance and playwriting; and allows students to meet with recruiters from top college and university theater programs across the country to interview and audition for admission and scholarships.

"I loved it," she said. "Since I attended last year, I knew what to expect, which is an unbelievable week of theatrical workshops and performances. The number of performances available as well as the level of talent is amazing. The opportu-

nity to speak to members in the industry as well as to spend an entire week amongst like-minded peers is an experience like no other. I also knew the level of competition I would be facing, which I have to say was a little intimidating, but overall, it was a wonderful experience that I am grateful to have had."

Now that she's graduated from high school, Weeks said she plans to attend Kennesaw State University for her freshman year then transfer to either the University of Georgia or the

Georgia Institute of Technology on a pre-med track.

"I'll eventually be applying to medical school and will go wherever that takes me," she said. "In a perfect world, I would love to minor in theater, and if possible, that is what I plan to do. I am hoping that while in college, I can stay involved in community theater programs and continue performing. Acting and theater is very dear to me, and it is an activity that I can see myself doing for the rest of my life."

Woman hesitates to go all in on promising relationship

DEAR ABBY: I just started dating an amazing guy. He is sweet, funny and handsome, but I don't feel as strongly for him as he does for me. Maybe it's too early in the relationship for me to be worried about feelings, or maybe as much as I want to have deep feelings for him, I don't.

Lately, I have been tempted to cheat. That sounds awful, I know, but for some reason, I feel it's my last chance before things start getting really serious with this guy. I want so badly to have this amazing relationship with him. It really feels like I could grow old with him, and I'd be OK with it. Or maybe I want a lifelong partner so badly that I'm forcing

By Abigail Van Buren

myself to keep seeing this guy. He's basically everything I've ever hoped for, and yet I'm hesitating, unwilling to give up being single and having freedom.

Is it normal to feel this way? Is it normal to have the urge to flee something amazing because I don't want to lose the ability to have total freedom? Or am I scared of commitment? Life is complicated; I am complicated. -- UNSURE

IN THE SOUTH

DEAR UNSURE: From where I sit, you do not appear to be ready to settle down. Also, you have "just started" dating this amazing man. Unless he starts pushing you to have an exclusive relationship, you would be wise to give it more time and see how things play out. Whatever it is that is holding you back will become apparent if you proceed slowly.

DEAR ABBY: My motherin-law manipulates my husband into lying to me and going behind my back. She is hard on him if he doesn't return her calls promptly, to the point of calling the police and

having them come to our home to "make sure his wife hasn't done anything to him."

She throws a tantrum if he calls her back when I'm around. She will speak to him only in private and doesn't want him to tell me about the calls or conversations. (He tells me anyway, although not all the details, which is fine.)

My husband and I feel her demands are destructive to our marriage. Last Thanksgiving was the first time he chose to spend the holiday with me and didn't see his family. It caused an uproar, and now she's giving him the cold shoulder and threatening to leave him out of the will. Help! -- IN-LAW BLUES IN TEXAS

DEAR BLUES: Your husband should not have had to choose between spending Thanksgiving with his wife or his family. There must be a lot more going on in addition to what you have put in your letter.

Be smart. The two of you should talk about this with a licensed marriage and family therapist who can help your husband find ways to cope with his mother's emotional blackmail and threats to disinherit him. Her need to control her son is sick and, I agree, destructive to your marriage. Please don't wait.

DEAR ABBY: I left high school in 1974 before gradu-

ating. I acquired my GED and don't know if it would be appropriate to attend my high school reunion all these years later. Any thoughts? -- REUNION IN OHIO

DEAR REUNION: For heaven's sake go! If you do, you will reunite with friends you haven't seen in many years, and I am sure they will be as glad to see you as you are to see them.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Once again we have a loosey-goosey day. Your efficiency at work will be impacted. Shortages and delays are likely. This is a poor day to spend money on anything other than food and gas. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is a playful, fun-loving day! You find it easy to be productive in creative ways, which is good news for those of you who work in the entertainment world or the hospitality industry. Enjoy! GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Enjoy cocooning at home today. Take it easy; however, restrict your spending to food, gas and entertainment. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You will enjoy talking to others today because you want to bond with someone, especially siblings, relatives and neighbors. However, make no promis-

es and agree to nothing important. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) You might be focused on cash flow and money today. Take note that this is a poor day to shop for anything other than food, gas or entertainment. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Today the Moon is in your sign, but it is a void-of-course Moon, which means this is a poor day to make important decisions or spend money. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You are high-viz this month, which is why you will welcome a chance to be low-profile today. Work alone or behind the scenes. (Mum's the word.) SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) This is a good day to enjoy warm conversations with friends and groups. Be happy socializing; however, don't volunteer for anything. Avoid important decisions. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Do not agree to anything important

when discussing matters with bosses, parents or VIPs, because this is a poor day for this. Just fill your databank. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Travel and a chance to escape to enjoy will delight you today. You also will be happy to learn new things and meet new people. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Today the Moon is in one of your Money Houses; nevertheless, this is a poor day for financial transactions or agreements. Restrict spending to gas, food and entertainment. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Today your focus is on partners and close friends. Conversations will be easygoing and frank. Let the chips fall where they may. YOU BORN TODAY You are loyal to family. You are also caring and sensitive and never want to be a burden to others. Good news! This is your time of harvest.

"They did really well," construction instructor and coach Barry Arrington Sr. said. "Fourth in the nation is great, and it's nice to have placed in the Top 10 every year we have went to nationals in TeamWorks. That's a testament to the great students and support we have at Adairsville High School."

At nationals, the AHS team won the gold in 2013, brought home bronze medals the last three years and came in eighth in 2015 and ninth in 2012.

"Three of the four members [Noggle, Bearden and Diaz-Sandavol] were on the team last year and felt they should have improved from third place last year, but that is the nature of the contest," Arrington said. "You can never tell what the outcome will be. The team did a great job but hit a few snags along the way that slowed them down, causing them to not finish this year."

The only thing the team had left to do was to "glue the PVC part of the plumbing, and they ran out of time," the coach said.

"In my opinion, if they had been able to get that done, they would have moved up to second, even first," he said. "Their project was the best there. To be honest, streaks are not what we're after. Our concern is doing the best we can, whether that's first or last."

Having Connor, who won the state plumbing title as a freshman, place in the Top 10 at his first national competition was quite a feat, according to Arrington.

"Connor coming in eighth as a freshman is outstanding," he said. "If he stays with it, he'll be a seasoned veteran as a sophomore."

Bearden, the team captain, said he was "very pleased with our fourth-place win."

"Each of my teammates did a

phenomenal job, and I was very pleased with their performances," he said.

"I look forward to next year and plan to put in even more work in order to have an even more successful year."

The 17-year-old leader, who has competed in SkillsUSA for two years, already is looking toward next year's competition.

"We had very good workmanship, but as a team, we need to work on speeding up and splitting up our task more effectively," he said. "I am so proud of my teammates for working and putting in the time and effort needed to make this happen. We have all evaluated our performance and have goals set for next year."

He also said he was grateful for the leadership of Arrington and the parental support the team

received this year. Connor, 15, said he thought his

eighth-place national finish was "awesome."

"First is always what you shoot for, but for my first time, I am very proud of eighth," he said. "I feel my performance was spoton but could have moved a little faster."

Competing on a national stage was "a privilege in itself, but to be a freshman and also never worked with plumbing in my life is even better," Connor said.

"This just shows that no matter your age, you can do whatever you want," he said.

He also said the contest was "more than I expected."

"The layout was very smooth and was never crazy," he said. "Everything was done in an orderly fashion."

Arrington said his TeamWorks students had to build a 64-square-foot kitchen/bathroom with gable roofs spanning 4 feet and 8 feet.

"The kitchen featured an exhaust hood, stove outlet, GFCI outlet, recessed lights and plumbing for a sink," he said. "The bathroom featured plumbing for a shower with a lighted exhaust fan. An inch-and-a-half vent line up through the walls on both sides joined in the attic space and then vented through the roof. There was masonry siding on an 8-foot exterior wall with a 6-inch reveal and a masonry facade featuring an inside corner with a four-course emblem that extended out 1 inch past the wall face."

Connor had to plumb a bathroom, Arrington said.

"Using cast iron below the floor, he plumbed the drain, waste and vent for a toilet, lavatory, a floor drain and a laundry tray," he said. "At 7 inches above the subfloor, he had to transition to all PVC, finishing the drain, waste and vent. He ran all water lines ?-inch and ?-inch copper and used the press-type joining method, not the usual sweating method. Connor learned valuable information from the contest and sees now just what he needs to do for the future."

Overall, 2018-19 was a "very good year for AHS SkillsUSA," especially with the "overwhelming" support the students received from the parents and community, Arrington said.

"I feel like the year could not have been any more successful except to win nationals," he said. "We only entered a plumber and TeamWorks at region and won all the way to nationals. The participants made achievements at nationals that only few students do. We have the greatest students at AHS."

He also added the TeamWorks team won the Northeast Georgia Skills Challenge earlier in the school year in addition to winning gold medals at the SkillsUSA state championship in March.

Plea

From Page 1A Judge Howell said. "But if you violate your probation, you can be resentenced without a trial and receive a felony conviction and suffer the consequences thereof."

Under the sentence, Adams is also ordered to pay a $1,000 fine plus attorney fees and surcharges.

Fox proposed three additional probation conditions accompany the five-year sentence.

"The victim's belief is that this is substance abuse-related, so the State would request that she submit to a substance abuse evaluation and follow the recommendations," she said. "The State would insist that she live in a residence with no pets of any kind, and lastly that she submit to a mental health evaluation and comply with all recommendations -- under this situation, we do believe that would address her individual problems as well as be a suitable sentence for this particular case."

Public defender Lora Alsher, however, requested that the mental health evaluation condition be dropped -- a proposal Judge Howell accepted. "She wouldn't be the first defendant who is using substances to treat another line of mental health evaluation," Fox responded. "Many people have substance abuse issues, but they don't kill cats -- that seems to be more along the lines of mental health."
