How to Use the “Data Projector” with a Laptop

Warning! Do not turn on the laptop until step #11!

1. First, pick up the actual projector itself (in its case, with cables), which is kept in Dr. Paris’ inner office (Cullimore 422). Ask Janet Bodner or Jerry Paris to show you where the keys are. (For future uses you may be able to get the projector out on your own.)

2. Take projector to your classroom and take the following items out of the carrying case: the projector, the black main power cord, and the blue computer connector cord.

3. Take the lens cap off. (Just pull it right off.)

4. Release the foot adjuster, which is a small, single leg beneath the lens, by pushing the small foot adjuster release button. This little leg assures that the projector rests at an angle, so that the images are projected at a slight, upward angle onto the screen.

5. Plug the three-pronged, black main power cord into the projector. (If you are facing the lens, the socket for this cord is found along the back of the left panel.)

6. Now plug the main cord into your power supply. (Use an extension cord if needed).

7. Next, attach the blue computer connector cord to the left side of the projector. You should see a rectangular connector outlined in blue that is the same shape as the cord. Attach it by first simply plugging it in, and then by tightening the two small screws.

8. Next, attach the other end of the blue computer connector cord to the back of the laptop. Again, look for the connection with the same shape and color.

9. Hit the “On/Standby” button on the top of the projector. You should see green lights on both sides of the “On/Standby” button after you turn it on.

10. Wait until you see the automatically projected screen that says “Toshiba.” Be patient. It takes a couple of minutes for the projector to heat up.

11. Next, hit the button on the top of the projector labeled “Input.” Look at the screen. In the top left corner of the, you should now see the word “ANALOG RGB.” If you do not see it, then press the button again until you do. (There are only three settings: Analog RGB, Video, and Camera). Warning! These settings are projected very high in the upper-left corner of the screen—sometimes they are projected above the screen.

12. Now turn on the laptop and log on.

13. On the screen, you should see a projected image of what you see on the computer monitor.

Not Working? Sometimes there is a problem between steps 11 and 12 and the projector stops projecting. If this happens, press down the Function key (Fn) and F8 at the same time—this usually works. If not, press the F-keys along the top of your keyboard. Start at F4 and keep trying them (from F4 to F8) until the projector projects. Be sure to pause after each attempt.
