Lesson Guide

LEADER PREPARATION

BIBLE BASIS

In a world desperately needing hope, it’s especially important that we show the hope that is within us because of Jesus. In Matthew 5, Jesus calls each of us to be salt and light to the world. We are to stand out from the rest of the world so that people will praise our heavenly Father. Use this lesson to help kids understand how to show hope to the world by sharing their faith in practical ways.

DISCOVERY POINT

We show hope by sharing our faith.

BIBLE FOCUS

Matthew 5:13-16

KEY VERSE

“Instead, you must worship Christ as Lord of your life. And if someone asks about your Christian hope, always be ready to explain it” (1 Peter 3:15).

TEACHING PREP

The short overview below is designed to help you prepare for your lesson.

Supplies You’ll Need: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, “Have a Plan” handout, flashlight, paper, pencils, chenille wires, poster board, markers, scissors, salted pretzels, unsalted pretzels, and resealable bags

Before This Lesson

• Print the “Have a Plan” handout. You’ll need one copy per crew of four kids.

• Assemble Bible Exploration Kits (one per four kids): “Have a Plan” handout, one resealable bag containing unsalted pretzels labeled “Bag Number 1,” one resealable bag containing salted pretzels labeled “Bag Number 2,” poster board, chenille wires, scissors, markers, pencils, Bibles.

• Review Matthew 5:13-16.

• Cue "Into the Bible" (Track 1) on the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or (Quarter 7/Track 1) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD.

• Huddle briefly with your volunteers beforehand. Answer any questions they have. Encourage them and pray.

PARENT EMAIL

We’ve provided you with a “Family Devotion” handout to send the Bible learning and faith discovery home. When kids and parents have faith discussions regularly, kids’ faith multiplies.

So we’ve given you two options:

• Print the “Family Devotion” handout and make enough copies for each child to take one home.

• Email the “Family Devotion” to families before or after the actual lesson.

Or why not do both? That way you’ll double the opportunities for parents to actually get the handout.

LESSON GUIDE

WELCOME!

Supplies: Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player, flashlight

1. Play “Into the Bible” (Track 1) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or (Quarter 7/Track 1) from the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD as kids arrive.

• “Into the Bible”

Makes me wanna jump!

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah!

It’s the greatest book.

Come and take a look.

Makes me wanna shout!

Shout! Shout! Shout! Shout!

So that everyone will see

I’m getting into the Bible

And the Bible...is getting into me!

We’re discovering a brand-new world

As we dig a little deeper (deeper),

Finding out about who God is.

Open it up and see it (see it)!

There’s nothin’ like

God’s Word, and I get

So excited.

It makes me wanna,

Makes me,

Makes me wanna jump!

Jump! Jump! Jump! Jump!

Makes me wanna sing! Hallelujah!

It’s the greatest book.

Come and take a look.

Makes me wanna shout!

So that everyone will see

I’m getting into the Bible

And the Bible...is getting into me!

2. Dim the lights before kids arrive. Turn on a flashlight, and place it in the center of the room.

SAY: We’re going to play a game called Flashlight Hope. Let’s imagine that we’re wandering in the forest and have lost all hope of finding our way out. Give one child the flashlight. The person with the flashlight is “It.” Everyone else will run around pretending to be lost. “It” will try to tag someone by shining the flashlight on him or her. When you’re tagged with hope, you become “It.” Play the game until most of the people have been tagged.

ASK:

• What were you thinking or feeling when you arrived and the room was dark?

• What was it like to be tagged by hope?

• Think of a time you felt lost or felt like you needed some hope. What helped you feel better?

• How does God give us hope?

SAY: Today we’re going to discover how we show hope by sharing our faith.

LET’S EXPLORE!

Supplies: assembled Bible Exploration Kits, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player

1. Start the “Digital Countdown” (Quarter 7/Countdown Track 2) on the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, and turn the volume way up. Lead kids in counting along. Then SAY: Find the two bags of pretzels in your Bible Exploration Kits. Have everyone taste a pretzel from Bag Number 1. Next, have the kids taste a pretzel from Bag Number 2. Ask them to identify the difference between the two tastes.

2. Help the crews find Matthew 5:13 in their Bibles. Have each person read one sentence of the verse. Have them discuss what difference salt makes in food, and what the verse is talking about.

3. SAY: We show hope by sharing our faith. Allow the kids to eat the pretzels while they read aloud Matthew 5:14-16. Ask them to discuss ways that they can become salt and light.

SAY: When we share our faith, it gives hope to others. We become like the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Let’s listen to this story about a girl named Tamesha who found hope. Play “Spotlight Hope” (Track 19) from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD.

ASK:

• Tell about a time you felt scared like Tamesha did.

• How did Ashton help her get over her stage fright?

• When Ashton helped Tamesha by sharing his faith, we could say that he was “salt” and “light” to Tamesha. How can we become salt and light to others?

4. Have the crews take the “Have a Plan” handout from their Bible Exploration Kits and read the handout. Ask them to discuss ways to show hope by sharing their faith. Next, help them create a pencil topper according to the instructions.

5. Ask the crews to create their own Spotlight Hope drama by creating a play in which one of the characters needs hope and other characters show hope by sharing their faith. Next, turn out the room lights and have the crews perform their plays for each other. Have kids take turns using the flashlight to spotlight characters who are showing hope by sharing their faith.

SAY: We show hope by sharing our faith. Let’s remember to show hope to our friends this week by sharing our faith.

LET’S PRAISE!

Supplies: flashlight, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD, LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD, CD player, TV/DVD player

1. SAY: As we sing our first song, pass the flashlight around and take turns shining it on the ceiling as a symbol of showing hope by sharing our faith.

2. Set up the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD or the LIVE Children’s Curriculum (Year 2) DVD. PLAY:

• “You Are My Friends” (John 15:14) (CD Track 7) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 7)

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Tell everyone what an awesome God I am.

Friends are friends when it’s daytime or it’s night,

And God is a friend who will be there all the time.

We can talk to him, and he will listen.

God will always be right by your side

’Cause he says,

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Tell everyone what an awesome God I am.

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Trust me and love me: You’ll always be my friends.

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Tell everyone what an awesome God I am.

You are my friends if you do what I command.

Trust me and love me: I’ll always be your friend.

• “The Spirit Gives Me Life” (Romans 8:10) (CD Track 4) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 4)

God is with me wherever I go.

Christ is in me, and I know that I know

’Cause he gave his life.

He lived and died.

(Chorus)

And now the Spirit gives me life, it gives me life, it gives me life

Because I have been made right, I’ve been made right with God.

The Spirit gives me life, it gives me life, it gives me life

Because I have been made right, I’ve been made right with God. Yeah!

The Spirit gives me life.

God is with me wherever I go.

Christ is in me, and I know that I know

’Cause he gave his life.

He lived and died.

(Repeat chorus.)

• “My Help Comes From the Lord” (Psalm 121:2) (CD Track 5) (DVD Quarter 7/Track 5)

Sometimes I feel afraid;

I need someone to help me find my way,

Someone who holds me up

And gives me strength

To get me through the day.

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You are all I’ll ever need.

My help comes from the Lord;

I’m trusting in your name.

You are my God;

It will always be true,

My help comes from you.

Sometimes I feel afraid;

I need someone to help me find my way,

Someone who holds me up

And gives me strength

To get me through the day.

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You are all I’ll ever need.

My help comes from the Lord;

I’m trusting in your name.

You are my God;

It will always be true,

My help comes from the Lord,

Who made heaven and earth.

You are all I’ll ever need.

My help comes from the Lord;

I’m trusting in your name.

You are my God;

It will always be true,

My help comes from you,

My help comes from you.

LET’S PRAY!

Supplies: paper and pencils

Have the kids spend a few moments praying about ways they can show hope by sharing their faith. As they pray, have them make a list of people they can share their faith with.

HIGH FIVES

Supplies: flashlight

Have the kids form a line snaking around the room. Give the first person in line the flashlight, and have him or her say, “Share your faith” and pass the flashlight to the next person while giving the person a high five. Encourage kids to shine the flashlight on the ceiling as they pass it on and say the phrase.

FOR-EXTRA-TIME ACTIVITIES

City on a Hilltop

Supplies: none

Have kids discuss practical ways to show hope as they create a city on a hilltop from items they find in the room (chairs, tables, jackets, wastebaskets, and so on). After they’ve built their city, have them act out ways to show hope by sharing their faith.

Find the Light

Supplies: flashlight

Let each crew choose someone to step out of the room while kids help you hide the “lamp under a basket” (hide the flashlight somewhere in the room). After each person has found the light, have crews discuss ways to “shine their light” of hope at school this week.

Create a Bible Dictionary

Supplies: paper, markers, dictionary, CD player, Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD

Ask kids to create one or more pages, each with a new word, for a Bible dictionary. Have kids suggest words from today’s lesson—salt and faith are two suggestions. Have them write each word on a sheet of paper in fun letters, add a definition, list Scripture references, and make illustrations. Play “The Books of the Bible Song” (Track 8), from the Sticking With God: Knowing His Hope (Year 2/Quarter 7) CD while kids work. Add each page to a three-ring binder, and watch the dictionary grow!
