Shalom, Pliskovers

Shalom, Pliskovers!

It’s finally Summertime! The rains have ceased, the sun is shining, the skies have… become a little less cloudy. It feels good to be outside. And with the new season comes a news update from the Pliskover Association.

Board Announcements

The Board is pleased to announce that Barbara Rosenzweig has been elected to the position of Corresponding Secretary. Please join us in congratulating and thanking Barbara for her service, loyalty, and dedication in support of the Pliskover Association.

Our active membership includes about 200 member (family) units. Annual membership dues (which were due April 30, 2011) and the generous donations of this membership base provide the funds needed for our operating budget. The Board thanks everybody for their continued support of the organization. For those of you who have not yet paid your dues, please send in your payments right away.

The Pliskover Association has made a donation of $50 to the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.

Passings:

We are sad to announce the following passings:

Rochelle (Rubin) Freedel, daughter of the late Abe and Grace Rubin, passed away on January 28, 2011. She is survived by her husband Paul Freedel of Pittsburgh and children Michelle Barkdoll, of Maryland, and Gerri Primak, of North Carolina. Rochelle was the sister of Lois Holbrook, Natalie Brodsky, and Marvin Rubin.

Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to Lil and Bernie Schwartz on the passing of their daughter, Sharyn Schwartz Corona, on Sunday, March 20. Sharyn had a courageous lifetime battle of health problems, and touched many lives with her positive attitude and outlook. May her family and friends wrap themselves in all the happy memories they shared.

Jack Lalanne, father of Yvonne (and Mark) Rubenstein, passed away in California this Winter. Our collective sympathies to all family and friends.

New Contact Found Us:

Matvey Bosis, of Ramat Gan, Israel, found the Pliskover Website (), while doing some genealogy research, and decided to contact us. Matvey’s great grandparents came from Pliskov, and are shown on our Pliskov map. Born in Kiev, Ukraine, at the age of 9, he made Aliya with his parents in 1991, and now works as a web programmer. He keeps in touch with a large part of his family in Israel, Russia, the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. He detailed some of his ancestry:

My father's name is Boris, his father was Mikhail, and his father was Leib Bosis - the name which appears on the map. I do not know about any siblings of Leib, or about his parents, and curious to find out. My grandmother, Sofia/Sheindla Bosis (Shinder), was from Pliskov as well. She had several siblings, the Shinder family. Her parents were David & Golda Shinder. I heard David had a fight with a neighbor and was killed. His parents were Feiga & Moshko Shinder (1850-1915). My grandmother's sister, Fanya (Feiga) married Yankel Shabshis there, and their house is also on the map, marked "Shapshis Feygla".

Matvey is trying to find out more about the history of his ancestors, their names, where they came from. He keeps in touch with a large part of my family tree, in Israel, Russia, the US, Canada, Australia, and Europe. Please let us know if you have anything you can share with Matvey.

Closing

I hope you enjoyed this short update, and I look forward to hearing from you with your news and notes to include in the next edition. But, more than that, I can’t wait to see everybody at the Pliskover Picnic (August 21, 2011). Spread the word!

Always,

Jared Kaufman
