The joys and sorrows, the griefs and anxieties the past year of 2015 seems to have been intense and regrettable more than ever before. The news reported over 355 instances of violent killings in the USA in 2015. The European Countries have shamed the United States for being a nation so disrespectful of its very self. Europe makes fun of us for being a Nation proclaiming freedom; freedom to kill, to cause disruption in society and protest anything, anytime, anywhere we want.

Cannot we, in our limited way, make a most special effort this New Year to fully realize God has given us the privilege of FAITH which rewards us to be able to pray with a powerful force. This means the power of prayer you make is accepted by the Lord God. Why do you think Mother Mary keeps telling us to pray, pray, pray? This means we can entreat God with confidence for his mercy and His assistance in caring for us (family) personally, for the stranger who needs help, for those who seek to harm us (and our nation) and for the earth.

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, which began on December 8, 2015, our Holy Father Francis said,”This is the oppotune moment to change our lives…to allow our hearts to be touched.” Let the Lord touch your heart in such a way you will realize how powerful your prayer can be if you pray with real faith firmly believing He hears our prayer and wants to act upon it.

Do you need a resolution? –Make it prayer! Make a pledge to make frequent use of the Churches special prayers it will be offering for the Year of Mercy and be an example to help all concerned to work more fervently for a world of justice and peace. There are many cares and concerns and problems in the Church and in the world that need to be resolved. Good will comes as a result of constant prayer.

Let this be the best year of your life!

On Friday, January 1st, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, our Lady's greatest title. This feast is the octave of Christmas. In the modern Roman calendar only Christmas and Easter enjoy the privilege of an octave. According to the 1962 Missal of Bl. John XXIII the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite, today is the Solemnity of Circumcision of Our Lord. "Mary, the all-holy ever-virgin Mother of God, is the masterwork of the mission of the Son and the Spirit in the fullness of time. For the first time in the plan of salvation and because his Spirit had prepared her, the Father found the dwelling place where his Son and his Spirit could dwell among men. In this sense the Church's Tradition has often read the most beautiful texts on wisdom in relation to Mary. Mary is acclaimed and represented in the liturgy as the "Seat of Wisdom." — Catechism of the Catholic Church 721

Gate of heaven, star of the sea,

Assist your people

You who received Gabriel's joyful greeting,

have pity on us, poor sinners.

YEAR OF MERCY ~ An Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy is underway in the Catholic Church universal and here in the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. Pope Francis proclaimed an Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy that began on December 8, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, and will conclude on November 20, 2016, the Solemnity of Christ the King. Throughout the year, the Diocese will place great emphasis on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy with a special focus on the Corporal Works of Mercy during the Lenten season. A number of special events are planned, including Days of Prayer reflecting on the Spiritual Works of Mercy. In keeping with the Holy Father's request that all dioceses open "Doors of Mercy," there will be Pilgrimage and Indulgence Prayer opportunities during the summer at three parishes in our Diocese celebrating their 200th anniversary. For more information, and prayer resources, please visit the special Year of Mercy section on the Diocesan website, .

We are placing names of the sick in the bulletin for prayer providing they give permission. Although we remember all sick and shut-ins at every Mass, we would like our parish family to be aware of the need for special prayer intentions because of a most serious illness or hospital stay. May the Divine Physician send healing grace for those for whom we pray: Josephine Koshute, Allen C. Rosemas, Patricia Murphy, Todd Euen, Bernice Myers, Dwight Fyock, Lori Facciani, Dylon Wills, Dawn Hagen, Debbie Dibert, Ronald Partsch, Missy, Joanne (Kolar) Hufford, Christine Flanagan, Ayden Alan Grata, Remy Beaver, Mary Lou Offman, Marian Chuckalovcak, Mildred Beesoick, John T. This Sunday is the Feast of the Holy Family. While it’s supposed to remind us that family life is sacred, the Gospel for this day—Jesus getting separated from his parents and lost in the Temple—shows that even the Holy Family had to struggle with holiness. What parent, after all, can’t relate to the relief and hurt in Mary’s voice when she wants to know why her son has strayed. Let it be a reminder that all kids may stray a bit on the path to holiness; we can always check on them when they seem really lost.

A young polar bear cub approached his mother one day and asked, "Mom, am I a polar bear?" "Of course you are," she replied with a smile.

"OK," said the cub, and padded off. Later, he found his dad out by the iceberg.

"Dad, am I a polar bear?" "Sure you are, son!" said his dad, wondering a bit at why his son would ask such a silly thing. The next day, the cub asked the question again and again. "Are you and mom polar bears? You are? Well, then, does that make me a polar bear? Pure, 100% polar bear?"

Finally, his parents couldn't stand it any longer. "Son, you're driving us crazy with this question! You are a polar bear! Why do you keep asking?"

The cub looked up and confessed, "Cause I'm FREEZING!
