Objective: Successful students will be able to understand the importance of taking care of injured body parts/areas and what to do incase of an emergency.

Activity:

1. Read I Broke My Trunk! to children at Circle Time

2. Discussion:

a. Ask questions about what happened to Gerald.

b. Who has ever been hurt before?

c. Did you go to the doctor or just need a band aid?

i. What do you think Gerald had to do?

d. Was anyone with you?

e. If so, who took care of you?

f. If not, what did you do?

3. Discuss the importance of knowing what to do when you are injured.

a. Reflect back on answers given by students earlier.

b. Talk about calling 911 when injured, in danger, or someone else needs help.

4. Practice calling 911 on real telephones (use different types of phones).

a. Have a class model come up and “call 911;” the teacher will be the dispatcher.

b. When finished, discuss what was said and how something should be handled if in a real situation.

c. Stress importance of only calling if it is an emergency.

5. Optional: Have 911 dispatcher come into room to have discussion with children.
