Class NotesMonday October 31 / Monday November 7IntroductionHello, my name is Jack Smith. I am a graduate student at Kent State University in the Masters of Library and Information Science program. I am interested in Reference Librarianship. I am currently doing a practicum to gain experience in a library. Westlake Porter Public Library has been nice enough to let me work for them. I am in the Popular Materials Department, creating instructional guides for eBooks and eReaders. I want to thank the library for the opportunity.Advantages of eReaders and eBooksInstant Reading – You can download books at home at any time if you have a Westlake Porter Public Library card and internet access. Downloading and transferring books is a quick and simple process.Sustainable – eReaders are great because they do not require paper or much electricity. Portable – eReaders are lightweight and easy to carry anywhere. Additionally, you can store hundreds of books on a single device, which is much nicer than carrying around a sack full of books.Interactive – You can do unique things with the text in an eBook such as sharing passages or finding a definition of a word with many eReaders.Customizable – One nice feature of using an eReader is the fact that you can change text size amongst other features that make for easier reading. The Library CatalogThe catalog of digital books and audiobooks is overdrive. The main page features several options for browsing books. We will come back to this later.Adobe Digital EditionsThis free software is required to download and transfer eBooks on many eReaders such as the Nook, Sony Reader, Pandigital devices, and the Kobo along with many other eReaders. In addition, an Adobe ID is required to use the software and to use the Overdrive mobile app. eBooks and eReaders are a new technology. All of the kinks have not been worked out just yet, so the process can be confusing to new users and those unfamiliar with computers. However, I promise the process is simple once you know what to do, and I am here to guide you.Adobe IDThis is the Adobe registration Web page. You will want click on “Create an Adobe Account.” This is a free membership. After clicking on “Create an Adobe Account,” you’ll be asked to enter your information. You do not need to put in all of your information only you’re email address, name, city, state, and zip code. After scrolling down, you will be asked to sign up for several advertisements. I usually uncheck those boxes so I don’t receive those emails. I suggest writing down the email address and password associated with the account in a secure place for future reference. The next step is downloading Adobe Digital Editions.Adobe Digital EditionsAfter scrolling down, you’ll see a tan box marked “Install.” Click on that box.Click on “Install” again.Click on “Yes.”A “Setup” box will appear. Click “Next” and follow the instructions on the screen. After the installation is complete, the program will open. The first time you open the program, it will ask you to activate the program. Click “Continue.”Enter the email address and password that you created to use with the Adobe ID, then click “Activate,” then click “Finished.”This is the program. It is ready to use at this point. Keep the program open, but go back to your internet browser in order to download eBooks.WPPL Overdrive CatalogYou can either browse for books or search for specific titles, authors, series, etc. You can do this by clicking on “Advanced Search” on the right side of the Web page.I am a big Star Wars fan, so I want to see if there are any Star Wars novels available. I entered Star Wars into the title then “Adobe EPUB” as the format, and checked “Only show titles with copies available.”I can see that two titles are available for downloading today. I am interested in the first title, so I will click “Add to eBookbag.”The title has been added to my eBookbag. I can choose to continue browsing or searching for books, or I can proceed to download the book. I am happy with my selection, so I will choose to “Proceed to Checkout.”You will be required to enter your WPPL card number. Enter all characters with all letters and numbers with no spaces. You are able to choose your lending period for either 7, 14, or 21 days. I am a fast reader, so I will choose 7 days, but feel free to use the entire 21 day period. Then I will “Confirm Check Out” now that I am ready to download. This screen will show you the title you are about to download. Click on “Download.”A dialog box will appear. It will ask you to either save the book or open the book. I will open the book with Adobe Digital Editions. This is the easiest way to do so because the file will open directly to Adobe Digital Editions and I will not have to find the file on my computer later. The book will open in Adobe Digital Editions in the reading mode. I can read the file on the computer, but I prefer using an eReader, so I will click on the “Library View” option in order to prepare a transfer. The “Library View” mode has an icon that looks like three upright books. The next step is plugging the device into the computer using the provided USB cable. Adobe Digital Editions might ask you authorize the device. If so, click on “Authorize Device.”You can see that the left hand side of the screen has an icon and the name of your eReader. This particular example is of the Nook. Now I want to transfer the book, so I will highlight the book, click on the book, and drag the cover over the “Nook” logo and name. A green plus sign will appear to show that the book is about to be transferred. If you click on the eReader device icon and name, you can see the book has been successfully transferred. You are almost ready to read! However, you need to safely eject the device from your computer to ensure a transfer. Click on the “Start” menu icon or the Windows logo on the bottom left corner. Then click “Computer” or “My Computer.”You can see that the device is plugged in under “Devices with Removable Storage.” Right click on the device and left click on “Eject.” A notification will appear on the bottom right corner of your screen to confirm that you can unplug the device. Now it is time to read. To access books, read the instructions that came with your particular eReader.Returning BooksReturning an eBook is not necessary. After the loan period, the book will not be accessible for reading and returned automatically. However, if you finish a book earlier, or have the maximum amount of books checked out and want to download another, you can return books easily. Open Adobe Digital Editions. Plug in your device. Again, the device will appear on the bottom left. Click on the device to see the library books on the eReader. There is an arrow on the top left of the book cover. Click on the arrow, and then click “Return Borrowed Item.” A confirmation book will appear. Click on return. Files will still appear on your eReader after the loan period. You can do this same process to delete those files – instead of clicking on “Return Borrowed Item,” click on “Delete Item.”As you can see, the book has been removed from the device. Once again, go to “My Computer” to eject the eReader to safely remove the device.WHEW! That was a lot of information. Does anyone have any questions?Amazon KindleIn order to download Kindle books, you will need an Amazon account. If you have ordered anything from Amazon, including your Kindle, you can use this account information. However, if you do not have an account, it is easy to create one.Go to and click “Start Here” on the top of the page. You will be asked to enter an email address and a password. You will then be linked to a registration page. Enter your name, email address, and password. Once again, I suggest writing this information down in a secure place for future reference. If you have not already registered your Kindle, you will need to do so. On the left side of the Amazon home page, hover over “Kindle” with your mouse cursor, then “Manage Your Kindle.” On the left side of this page, click on “Register a Kindle.” Then enter the serial number and click on “Register.”Now it is time to download books. We will go to overdrive. This should look familiar. I will go back to the advanced search, but you can feel free to browse. Again, I am a big Star Wars fan, so I will see if I can download any titles for my Kindle. I see there are two titles available. I already read the first book, so I will checkout the second. I will “Add to eBookbag.”Then I will “Proceed to Checkout.”I will enter my library card number with all characters, all letters, and all numbers without spaces.Once again, I will choose the 7-day loan period. Like before, you can choose 7, 14, or 21 days.I will click on “Get for Kindle.” This will take me to my Amazon account. At this Web page, I have the option to choose the device I want to download the book to. I can choose my Kindle, or my Kindle app on my iPod touch. Other mobile devices that use the app will appear if you desire such as an iPad, iPhone, or Android device. The name will be different, but the principal is the same. The great thing about downloading Kindle books is that the books are sent wirelessly through WiFi. You do not need Adobe Digital Editions or extra software! If you do not have WiFi at home, you can visit the Westlake Porter Public Library to download the titles with our free WiFi.Do not worry. If you do not have WiFi, you can still transfer the book at home.Click on “Get Library Book.”This will confirm that the book is being sent to a device. If you do not have WiFi, you will want to click on “Download now.”A dialog box will appear and ask you to download the book. Normally, downloads are automatically sent to the “Downloads” folder, which you can access through the Start Menu, then your computer name, and then the “Downloads” folder. You can see that book is in my “Downloads” folder. Keep this folder open. You will want to open “My Computer” to transfer the book manually. You will see the Kindle is connected. Double click on the Kindle. With both windows open, drag the file for the book to the “Documents” folder on the Kindle with your mouse.Go to “My Computer” again. Right click on the Kindle then choose “Eject.” Now you can enjoy your book!It is possible to return books on the Kindle as well. However, it is a different process.Go to the Amazon home page. Choose “Manage Your Kindle.” This page will take you to the books you have on your device. You can see that library books are clearly labeled with the title “Public library.”Click on the “Actions” button then click on “Return this book.” Then click “Yes.” The page will refresh and the book will be removed from the list and your device.WHEW! That was a lot more information. Any questions?Mobile DevicesYou can download books to mobile devices such as the Apple iPod Touch, iPad, or iPhone in addition to Android devices. You will need an account with either Apple or Google depending on your device. Those accounts are free and are required to use with the App Store or Marketplace in order to download the specific apps. In addition, the Overdrive App requires the Adobe ID, which we went over earlier.Go to to sign up for an Apple ID.Go to to sign up for a Google account.Overdrive AppThe Overdrive app can be downloaded to both Android and Apple devices. An Adobe ID is required to use the app. I only have access to an Apple device, so the instructions might be slightly different for Android devices. For instance, you will download from the Marketplace rather than App Store, but the general instructions should be similar.Tap on the App Store or Marketplace icon. Search for "Overdrive." This the Overdrive app. Tap "Install," then "Install" again. You can enter your information for your Apple ID or Google account here. Now you'll see the app downloading.Enter your Adobe ID information here. This is the home screen of the Overdrive app. Tap on "Get Books+" to begin.Tap on "Add a Library." Search for "Westlake Porter." Tap the result for the library. Tap the star in order to add the library to your favorites for the future. Tap on "Westlake Porter Digital Media." This will open the Overdrive mobile catalog in the browser of your device. On the home screen of the catalog, tap "Login." Enter your card number with all characters, letters, and numbers without spaces. If you are the only one using the device, tap the box that says, "Remember me on this device."Tap on the "Home" button. We can browse or search for books. I find it easier to search for books on this device than it is to browse, but both functions can be performed.I will perform a search for one of my favorite authors. I can see that a title is available, so I will "Add to eBookbag." Similar to the website, I can choose to continue browsing or proceed to checkout. I will proceed to checkout. I will confirm that I want to download this title. Then I will download the title. This switches over to the Overdrive app where you can see that the title is about to download. Now the book is available, so I will simply tap on the book. To go to the next page, simply swipe your finger. There are also options in this app to change text size or brightness as you can see.To go back to the list of books on this app, tap on the back button. You can read other downloaded titles from this screen if you have more books download. It is possible to return books from the app too. To return, hold your finger on the app, then tap on the dash in the red circle, then tap "Delete," then finally tap "Return then Delete" in order to return the book and remove the book from the device.Next, I will show you instructions for the Kindle app. This is slightly out of order, so I apologize. If you choose to download a Kindle book to a mobile device, you simply select the device from the dropdown box on the Amazon website as I previously discussed. However, you will need to setup the app first. We will go back to the App Store or Marketplace. Search for "Kindle." Download the app from "AMZN Mobile LLC." Confirm that you want to download the app. The first time you use the app, you will need to login with your Amazon account information. You will see a list of archived items, which will contain all of the books that you either own or have downloaded from the library. Sometimes, the book will not load immediately, so tap on the circular arrow on the bottom left. You can see that another book has been added, so I will tap on "Archived Items." Next, scroll down to see the title that you downloaded then tap on the title. You will see that the title is downloading. Tap on the "Home" button. You will see that the book is ready to read. This app is similar to the Overdrive app in the fact that you can change text size and brightness easily. This concludes instructions for download eBooks to popular devices. I hope this was helpful and the presentation will be useful for when you start using your devices. I want to mention that the WPPL has free instructional guides for individual devices available. Furthermore, our web librarian, Matt Weaver, has a video series called "Small Bytes," which will also give step by step instructions.I will ask you to fill out a small survey about this class per request of my professor. ................
