H.H. Beam Elementary School | Counseling Newsletter – 2018-19School Counseling | K-5 | February 2019 | Happy February!The Counseling Department at H.H. Beam would like to wish you and your family a warm February! We are excited to continue working with our students, staff, and families in order to provide the best programs for our students. This month, we will participate in the Great Kindness Challenge, which aims to increase intentional, kind behavior in students and staff members. We will also celebrate Black History Month! We are excited to share that small group meetings have started for students in all grades. Each year, schools across the United States The Great Kindness Challenge. This week long campaign provides students with an opportunity to be intentionally kind to one another. This year’s campaign will take place February 11th – February 15th. Students will receive Kindness-focused lessons in Art, Library, and Counseling classes. Students will start the day with kindness quotes on the announcements. Each class will also work to collect 50 kind acts in order to earn a special in-class treat. Selected students have officially started participating in small group counseling! H.H. Beam offers two small groups; The Worry Busters, which focuses on increasing confidence and decreasing anxiety, and the Beam Social Club, which focuses on improving social skills, social problem solving skills, and conflict resolution skills. If you would like for your student to participate, please call or email a counselor to request a consent form. DID YOU KNOW: February is Black History Month. Students will be able to engage in special travel class activities. Be on the lookout for wall decorations & classroom doors that honor this special Month! Classroom GuidanceKids learn best when they receive the same information multiple times in multiple places. By reviewing key social & emotional concepts with your child, you can help him or her grow! This month, all students will be receiving special, kindness-themed guidance lessons. Kindergarten, First, and Second Grade are following the Second Step Curriculum. Students will also be receiving selected lessons on various career paths. During these lessons, students learn about listening skills, learning skills, and assertiveness skills. What you can do: Ask your student to share one thing they learned in each subject (Reading, Math, Specials) per day. This helps boost memory and retention. Third grade has received guidance on key topics such as listening skills, making good decisions, and solving social problems. Fourth and Fifth grade will receive similar lessons on these topics. This month, 3rd grade students will receive the Play it Safe curriculum. What You can do: Talk to your student about how to determine whether someone is a good friend. Each month, Mrs. Warner works with teachers and staff members to select two students for the Do the Right Thing Nomination. Nominated students are recognized for their ability to “Do the Right Thing” in a difficult or tough situation or when it is not the popular thing to do. Honored students are featured in the Gaston Gazette. Be sure to check out the Gaston Gazette to see this month’s nominees! Third grade classes will be receiving the Play It Safe curriculum from February 25th through March 1st. This curriculum teaches children about safe touch and how to find help if needed. Letters were sent home regarding this curriculum on February 6th. You can preview the curriculum in H.H. Beam’s front office. It takes our families, community, students, and staff working together as a team to make a difference.
