4 KINDS/TYPES OF SENTENCES
Punctuating & Classifying Sentences by Purpose
DECLARATIVE SENTENCE
- makes a statement
- ends with a period
- has a subject
Example: I am tired of winter.
INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE
- asks a question
- end with a question mark
- BE CAREFUL: Don’t assume because you see “How” or “What” at the beginning that it is a question. (It could be exclamatory.)
Example: Who is your teacher?
IMPERATIVE SENTENCE
- gives a command or makes a request, tells someone to do something
- usually ends with a period
- the subject is hidden or understood to be YOU
Example: Close the door. (You) close the door.
EXCLAMATORY SENTENCE
- expresses strong feeling or surprise
- ends with an exclamation point
- can begin with “How” or “What” with the subject and verb sometimes omitted.
Example: What a beautiful day!
