What’s So Spiritual About Your Gifts? Pt. 4

VIII. The Gift has an Assignment

A. Those that possess the gift of the Holy Spirit have been given ministry gifts for their assignments. If God thought enough of you to give you something that Jesus had to be crucified for. He wants a return on His investment. Because your “gift” from Him should bring fruit to Him! This happens through obedience. Obedience to the call of God isn’t always convenient but it is always necessary. Obedience activates the enabling power of the Holy Spirit and this will help to accomplish the assignment. But if you will not obey the Lord and do His Will, there’s no need for Him to give you the necessary power to use your ministry gifts effectively.

1. Luke 4:13-19 – 13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. 14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read. 17 And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. (KJV)

2. Exodus 19:5-6 – 5 Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: 6 And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation... (KJV)

3. Acts 1:6-8 – 6 When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? 7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. 8 But ye shall receive power , after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. (KJV)

B. Your assignment should become a priority in your Christian walk. It should be something that you focus on in the midst of adversity. Because when you know you have been given an order from God, until that goal is accomplished you can’t lose the spiritual war that you are fighting. There are going to be some battles where you “feel” defeated, but your feelings will lie to you! You had the victory before your fight ever started because of the Blood of Jesus going to the cross. So when He picked you for this particular task, He not only gave you the KEYS for victory, but GIFTS of specialty for the assignment in which He would get glory.

1. Philippians 3:12-14 – 12 I don’t mean to say that I have already achieved these things or that I have already reached perfection! But I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ Jesus saved me for and wants me to be. 13 No, dear brothers and sisters, I am still not all I should be, but I am focusing all my energies on this one thing: Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, 14 I strain to reach the end of the race and receive the prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us up to heaven. (NLT)

2. Matthew 12:46-50 – 46 While Jesus was talking to the people, his mother and brothers stood outside, trying to find a way to talk to him. 47 Someone told Jesus, “Your mother and brothers are standing outside, and they want to talk to you.”

48 He answered, “Who is my mother? Who are my brothers?” 49 Then he pointed to his followers and said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 50 My true brother and sister and mother are those who do(the will of) what my Father in heaven wants.” (New Century Version)

3. John 4:31-34 – 31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat. 32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of. 33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat? 34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.(KJV)

IX. The SET-UP

A. One of the main reasons believers struggle with using their ministry gifts, is the process in which God uses called “the set-up”. Meaning God does allows things around you to “look” or appear to be so wrong, and God is using that circumstance or situation so He CAN DO what you cannot do. The set-up is for the believer to do extraordinary things with his/her gifts. If you are asking God for miracles, REMEMBER you can’t have one without an opportunity for God to perform it!

1. Luke 2:10-14 –10 And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. 12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, 14 Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. (KJV)

2. Luke 8:41-55 – 41 And behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue. And he fell down at Jesus’ feet and begged Him to come to his house, 42 for he had an only daughter about twelve years of age, and she was dying. But as He went, the multitudes thronged Him. 43 Now a woman, having a flow of blood for twelve years, who had spent all her livelihood on physicians and could not be healed by any, 44 came from behind and touched the border of His garment. And immediately her flow of blood stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who touched Me?” When all denied it, Peter and those with him said, “Master, the multitudes throng and press You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’ ” 46 But Jesus said, “Somebody touched Me, for I perceived power going out from Me.” 47 Now when the woman saw that she was not hidden, she came trembling; and falling down before Him, she declared to Him in the presence of all the people the reason she had touched Him and how she was healed immediately. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, be of good cheer, your faith has made you well. Go in peace.” 49 While He was still speaking, someone came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house, saying to him, “Your daughter is dead. Do not trouble the Teacher.” 50 But when Jesus heard it, He answered him, saying, “Do not be afraid; only believe, and she will be made well.” 51 When He came into the house, He permitted no one to go in except Peter, James, and John, and the father and mother of the girl. 52 Now all wept and mourned for her; but He said, “Do not weep; she is not dead, but sleeping.” 53 And they ridiculed Him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Little girl, arise.” 55 Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat. (NKJV)

B. We must REMEMBER everything God has done in our lives. If He has kept you alive, healed your body, protected you from dangers, made ways out of no ways, forgiven you of sins you wouldn’t tell anybody, loved you when you didn’t love yourself, covered you when you wouldn’t go to church, and was patient and longsuffering with you when you did not pray or fast. And you have all these testimonies and more, so now that a test or trial “seems” to look like you are going to be overtaken, you can use these rolodexes of testimonies to RELY on the RESUME’ that God has already proven with you. So you should be able to believe that the same Father that brought you out before, HE CAN DO IT AGAIN!

1. Mark 6:46-52 – 46 And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. 47 And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. 48 And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. 49 But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: 50 For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. 51 And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. 52 For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. (KJV)

2. Luke 9:38-41 – 38A man shouted from the crowd, “Teacher! I beg you, look at my son—my only son! 39A spirit attacks him with a sudden shout and throws him into a fit, so that he foams at the mouth; it keeps on hurting him and will hardly let him go! 40I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.” 41 Jesus answered, “How unbelieving and wrong you people are! How long must I stay with you? How long do I have to put up with you?” (Today’s English Version)

X. It’s not you, it’s God in YOU!

A. As God’s children we must never forget that we are merely instruments that God chose to use. We did not earn or merit the right to have God’s sovereign power, but it was given from Him, to be used by Him, so that people would believe in Him. The church has routinely made preachers and evangelists and ministers into modern day Hollywood stars. But you can never be greater than the creator! Be careful not to take credit for what only God could do. You must stay meek and humble so that God will continue to do even GREATER things through you.

1. Ephesians 3:7-9 – 7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power. 8 Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ; 9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ: (KJV)

2. Philippians 4:6-7, 12-13 – 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (KJV)

12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. 13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (KJV)
