This test verifies that the shift control system is operating correctly.

1. Bring engine and transaxle up to normal operating temperature.

2. Operate vehicle with selector lever in D range.

3. NOTE: Shift speed ranges are approximate for all applications. For specific applications (engine, axle ratio and application) refer to the Automatic Transmission Specification Issue available from Ford Customer Service Division.

Apply minimum throttle and observe speeds at which upshift occurs and torque converter engages using the shift speeds chart.

Shift Speeds

|Throttle Position |Range |Shift |KM/H |MPH |

|Closed Throttle |D |4-3 |47 |29 |

| |D |3-2 |24 |15 |

| |D |2-1 |10 |6 |

|Min. Throttle |D |1-2 |14 |9 |

|(TP voltage 1.25) |D |2-3 |27 |17 |

| |D |3-4 |61 |38 |

|Wide Open |D |1-2 |68 |42 |

|Throttle |D |2-3 |109 |68 |

| |D |3-4 |154 |96 |

| |D |4-3 |146 |91 |

| |D |3-2 |98 |61 |

| |D |2-1 |45 |28 |

4. Stop vehicle, with the selector lever in the D range, press the overdrive cancel button. Repeat Step 3. Transaxle will make all upshifts except 3-4 and torque converter clutch apply should occur above 40 km/h (25 mph).

5. With vehicle speed above 43 km/h (27 mph), press accelerator pedal to floor, wide-open throttle (WOT). Transaxle should shift from third to second, or third to first, depending on the vehicle speed. The torque converter clutch should release.

6. With vehicle speed above 56 km/h (35 mph), move the selector lever from D range to 1 range (LOW) and remove foot from accelerator pedal. Transaxle should immediately downshift to second gear. When vehicle speed drops below 45 km/h (28 mph), transaxle should downshift into first gear.

7. If transaxle fails to upshift/downshift or TCC does not apply and release, refer to Diagnosis By Symptom for possible causes.
