KS1 Grammar, Punctuation and Spelling Workshop for Parents

Welcome to our KS1 Grammar, Punctuation

and Spelling Workshop for Parents

The Aims Of This Evening

? To tell you about the grammar, punctuation and spelling expectations for foundation and KS1.

? To share the Key Stage 1 grammar, punctuation and spelling test.

Grammar and Punctuation in Reception

? The use of correct grammar is modelled through speech in the first instance and then through reading and writing.

? Communication and language is a prime area and recognized to be essential in children's English development.

? We expect the children to use the correct forms of past, present and future tense when talking about events and to express themselves effectively showing awareness of the listener's needs.

? We aim to develop a wide vocabulary through role play, story and their play.

Spelling in Reception

? Phonics is our main focus and by the end of FS we want all children to know all of the individual letter sounds and names.

? They should know all of the phonemes taught in phases 2 and 3 for example:

ch sh ai or igh ee ow th ng oa oo

Year 1

? We continue to teach daily phonics throughout year 1. We set for phonics and we teach in small groups.

? We teach children phase 4 and 5 phonemes which is about applying their knowledge and using the alternative graphemes.

? Early on in Year 1 we focus on the spelling of tricky words and as the year goes on we also look at suffixes and prefixes (ed, ing, er, s, es, un).
