PHYSICS 125 – EQUIPMENT LIST – SPRING 2010
LAB 1: INTRODUCTION TO THE OSCILLOSCOPE (Jan. 28)
Oscilloscope (Tektronix 2205 or equivalent)
Digital Multimeter
Function generator (PASCO PI-9587C)
BNC-male to dual banana jack adapter
Connecting wires with banana plugs
Optional: Digital oscilloscope (Tek 2000 series), Counter, BNC Tee, and coax cables for optional demonstrations of more modern equipment (on a side table) (1 setup)
LAB 2: ELECTRIC FIELDS AND EQUIPOTENTIALS (Feb. 4)
Cork board (at least 9” x 12”)
Probe pins (T-shaped or “mallet head”, at least 3) and Push pins (at least 4)
Conducting sheets (prepared prior to class, two or three configurations of silver paint conductors)
Connecting wires (with banana plugs, on wall rack) and alligator clips (at least 5)
Digital multimeter (Fluke D810 or equivalent)
Blank sheets of paper (8.5” x 11”) and a ruler or straightedge
Battery (1.5 V) in battery holder
LAB 3: JOULE HEAT (Feb. 11)
DC power supply (built into the lab bench, Hampden)
Connecting wires (with banana plugs, on wall rack)
DPDT switch (with spade lugs to banana adapters)
2 Digital multimeters (DMMs) (Fluke D810 or equivalent)
Electrocalorimeter (double Al beakers, spacer, wire coil on a support with binding posts)
Stopwatch or digital timer, digital thermometer, lab balance
(No ice needed this year.)
LAB 4: OHM’S LAW (Feb. 18)
DC power supply (built into the lab bench, Hampden)
Connecting wires (with banana plugs, on wall rack)
DPDT switch (with spade lugs to banana adapters)
2 Digital multimeters (Fluke D810 or equivalent)
Resistors (5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 ohm) and one light bulb (in Edison socket with banana posts)
Graph paper, linear, 2 per student, and a ruler

LAB 5: RESISTANCES IN SERIES AND PARALLEL (Feb. 25)
DC power supply (built into the lab bench, Hampden)
Connecting wires (with banana plugs, on wall rack)
DPDT switch (with spade lugs to banana adapters)
2 Digital multimeters (Fluke D810 or equivalent)
Resistors (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 100 ohm)
LAB 6: REFLECTION AND REFRACTION (April 1)
Corkboard (about 18” square) and a stand to support it (such as the Force Table)
Plane mirror mounted on wooden block
Glass (or plastic) cube (about 5 cm on an edge)
Pins (push pins and long straight pins or T pins), blank paper, pencil, protractor, and ruler
LAB 7: GEOMETRIC OPTICS KIT (April 8)
Optics Kit with cylindrical concave and convex lenses, trapezoidal prism, mirror, and half-round
Light box configured to produce 3 or 4 rays of light. White paper, pencil, ruler, and protractor
LAB 8: SPHERICAL MIRRORS AND LENSES (April 15)
PASCO linear optical bench with “object” source (light box and wall plug)
White viewing screen, mounted half-screen, mounted dual-surface (convex-concave) mirrors
Mounted lenses with f = + 100 mm and - 150 mm
White index cards (3”x5” and/or 4”x6”), protractor, 4 rulers, flashlight, and table lamp
LAB 9: NUCLEAR RADIATION: HALF-LIFE (April 22) in room 314
Source of radiation, Cs-137/Ba-137m isotope generator (beta source)
Geiger counter, interfaced to a PC with the Vernier LabPro® interface
Graph paper: 1 sheet of semi-log paper
Rectangular holder and aluminum disk
LAB 10: NUCLEAR RADIATION: THE GEIGER COUNTER, INVERSE-SQUARE LAW, AND ABSORPTION OF RADIATION (April 29)
Geiger counter and Geiger tube, Co-60 (gamma rays) source, Sr-90 (beta) source
Graph paper: 1 sheet of 2x2 log-log, 1 sheet of 2-cycle semi-log, 2 sheets of linear
Absorber kit with lead and polyethylene disks, plastic ruler
