MEDICAL ASSISTANT

SUMMARY

Works under the general directions of the Director of Nursing. Provides limited direct patient services and performs specifically designated independent procedures. Responsibilities include assisting physicians and other providers in the provision of primary health care and working as a member of the clinical support team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

General

1. Assures smooth patient flow throughout the clinic by effectively participating and communicating with the Director of Nursing.

2. Screening and preparing patients for examination (to include taking vital

signs, height, weight, BP, pulse, respirations, BMI, identification of chief

complaint, reason for visit, other demographic and social history of

patients including but not exclusive, tobacco use, alcohol use, drug use,

LMP, Pap smear, last breast exam, last mammogram, pharmacy, drug

allergies, current medications, pain scale and accurately documents

information on the appropriate medical forms in the chart).

3. Keeps ill patients comfortable until seen by the provider and also keeps

the providers informed of changes in the patient’s condition.

4. Ensures that an appropriate environment for the administration of

healthcare is kept by keeping exam rooms, nurses’ stations, all

equipment and other work areas are clean, safe and maintained in an

orderly fashion.

5. Conducts patients screening for hearing, vision, and other simple routine

procedures.

6. Collects specimens for laboratory work ordered by providers to be sent to

contracted laboratory (ie., LabCorp) and accurately inputs lab orders and patient information into lab’s system (as training/certification allows)

7. Performs routine laboratory procedures (drawing blood and performing

limited in house CLIA waived testing).

8. Properly discharges patient from clinic visit by ensuring that the patients’ chart is closed with necessary actions being taken including:

a. scheduling appointments

b. making referrals and properly documenting them in patients’ charts

c. issuing sample medications as ordered by providers

d. referring patient to patient advocates for enrollment in prescription assistance program (if applicable)

e. reviewing provider orders

f. distributing and reviewing patient education materials with patient prior to completing discharge instruction sheets

g. signing off chart as orders are completed.

9. Assists providers in healthcare activities, performance of diagnostic and/or

therapeutic procedures, and the administration of medications as necessary.

10. Schedule appointment for patients to specialty providers, lab, radiology

and other services not provided by OMC per provider instructions.

11. Maintain all medical log books (i.e. referral, lab, medication, temperature

quality control, crash carts, hand washing tools, etc.) on a daily basis.

12. Answer telephone calls from patients, other providers, pharmacy,

hospitals, health agencies and pharmaceutical representatives

13. Assists lead nurse and Director of Nursing in maintaining

the inventory log for medical supplies, equipment and medications.

14. Stock exam rooms with needed supplies, equipment and instruments.

15. Maintenance of Emergency equipment supplies and crash cart.

16. Cleaning of surgical instruments.

17. Notify pharmaceutical representatives per provider instructions when

medication samples are low.

18. Participates in team meetings and daily huddles where applicable.

19. Performs Duties in accordance with Patient Centered Medical Home concepts.

20. Conducts previsit chart review and participates in patient population management activities as determined by the practice.

21. Participates in training of evidence-based approaches to patient self-management support.

OTHER DUTIES

Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Graduation from an accredited training school for Medical Assistants.

2. Have current certification as a Medical Assistant

3. Two years experience as a MA in a healthcare setting with sufficient knowledge to carry out the duties of this position

4. Must be qualified in Basic Life Support techniques and have current CPR certificate.

5. Must have people skills, interpersonal skills, and the ability to relate with warmth, empathy, effectiveness to the patients and to the providers of OMC.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Reports directly to the Director of Nursing

EVALUATION

The evaluation of work performance will be ongoing and will be carried out by the Director of Nursing. It will include the specific duties and responsibilities of this position description plus employee attitude and general working behavior. Formal evaluation will normally be performed annually, but may be initiated at other times by the CEO, Director of Nursing or employee.

WORKING CONDITIONS

May be required to work some evening shifts, weekends, holidays, overtime, and at various sites.

STATUS

FLSA non- exempt.

OSHA high-risk.

ADA negotiable.

The salary is commensurate with OMC’s salary scale for this position.
