Conflict ManagementSubmitted by Tracy Stanley, CHUC, of Spokane Valley, WashingtonObjectives:Define conflict management.List four types of conflict management skills.Identify proper usage of conflict management skills. List five conflict management styles.According to Wikipedia, conflict management is “the process of limiting the negative aspects of conflict while increasing the positive aspects of conflict.” By nature, humans tend to disagree. However, not all disagreements are bad. Causes for disagreements can vary by situation, but poor communication can make a mountain out of a molehill. According to The Balance Careers “Communicating clearly, empathetically and patiently leads to favorable outcomes and the aim should not be to avoid conflict but resolve it in an effective manner.”Types of conflict management skills include communication, emotional intelligence, empathy, and creative problem munication: Using accurate, clear communications can prevent conflict. Do not assume you know what others are thinking. Be a good listener; some people just want to be heard. Good communication skills can include addressing problems quickly, active listening, negotiating, non-verbal communication and encouraging open dialogues.Emotional Intelligence: Understanding our own feelings, plus those of other people, and how well we deal with those feelings. Emotional intelligence can be shown by being adaptable and analytical, being willing to compromise and being respectful, being optimistic and motivated, as well as helping others and forgiving transgressions.Empathy is the ability to feel what others feel and see things from their viewpoint. Empathy allows us to develop an understanding of others’ motivations and/or needs. Empathy can be shown by showing compassion, embracing diversity and inclusion, building trust, offering constructive feedback, managing emotions, and exercising good self-control and interpersonal skills.Be creative when solving a problem. All the other conflict management skills will not be of much help unless you can identify the underlying problem and come up with a solution. Creative problem solvers employ conflict analysis, verbal, and non-verbal communication, they collaborate and brainstorm, they integrate goals and creativity, and must have a sense of humor. Why is conflict management so important? Left unchecked, conflict leads to negativity, increased tensions and draining your energy. Conflict management can strengthen bonds amongst employees making for a more positive work environment. It can help stop a fight in the first place, so negative consequences are not experienced. It can help find the middle ground and offer other ways to solve a problem(s). But most important conflict management is a part of our life. Arguing with family and friends causes negativity and potential fallouts. As Management Study Guide said, “The blame game never helps anyone, instead it makes life miserable.”There are five Conflict Management Styles, these include: accommodating, avoiding, compromising, collaborating, and competing.Accommodators give up their own needs and/or desires and place the concerns of others first. This happens when you give in or are persuaded to give in. Blog HubSpot says “This style could be appropriate to use when you care less about the issue than the others, want to keep the peace, feel as though you are in the wrong, or feel like you have no choice but to agree to the other point-of-view.”Avoiders want to evade the conflict all together. They would not pursue the conflict but would simply ignore it. This style could be used if the conflict is viewed as trivial, you feel like you cannot win, and to avoid being resented by promisers like to please all those involved. Unfortunately, while trying to find some common ground you usually end up satisfying some while others remain unsatisfied. Blog HubSpot says “This style could be appropriate to use when it's more important to reach a solution than for the solution to be great, a deadline is rapidly approaching, you're at an impasse, or you need a temporary solution for the moment.”Collaborators try to find solutions that make everyone happy. They go for win-win situations by finding a solution that satisfies everyone. This occurs when the final solution is of great importance and no one should be left peters like to get their own way by pushing their viewpoint. They refuse to acknowledge others’ ideas and perspectives. Blog HubSpot says “This style could be appropriate when you have to stand up for your rights or morals, need to make a quick decision and force others to get on board, need to end a long-term conflict, or have to prevent a terrible, opposing decision from being made.”Resources:conflict-management-skills-2059687importance-of-conflict-management.htm QUIZ?????????????????????????????????????????
