Club Corner - NAME Region E-1

[pic]… From your Maryland State Rep…

Hi Everyone,

We had quite a crowd for the National NAME Day event this year.  Nancy Chalmers did a great job of putting it all together for us.  Thank you, Nancy.  Forty-four enthusiastic miniaturists met at Bullock’s Restaurant and quickly got to working and visiting.  We had 11 guests from the First State Miniature Club of Delaware, who joined us for the day.  It is always fun to play miniatures with our neighbors. They invited us to visit them next spring, on March 24th, for their Miniatures Show and Sale.  If you have not gone to their show, it is always a fun day!

Donna Cabry brought breakfast cake and pastries that were awesome. Thank you, Donna!  The NAME birthday celebration was recognized with a cake made by Starry Night Bakery of Westminster. Yum!  Many thanks to all of those who contributed to our tote bags, especially First State Mini club who contributed the books.

We had a dozen or so exhibits, including “The Retreat” in all three scales from the upcoming 2013 Gazette Houseparty.  There were a couple of exhibits with interesting lighting systems, including fiber optics. I definitely need to find a project for using those flashing multi-colored lights!  They are made from pre-made bows, and I'll be looking for them this holiday season (let me know if you find them).  I love lights!

So… back to the Alcove.  Most everyone came close to, if not finishing the Alcove, and many had plans for completing their projects.  We are so creative!  There was also some lively discussion about future NAME Day projects, so it looks like this crowd will be back next year for another NAME Day event!

Olivia and I will be attending the International Plastic Modelers Society Show, MarauderCon, on November 10, at the Hilton Garden Inn in White Marsh.  We will be setting up our NAME table, introducing our hobby and hoping their might be some crossover interest.  They have a number of exhibit categories, including Aircraft, Military Vehicles, Ships, Automotive and Space Sci-Fi.  I'm excited to see what they do.  My son used to make models and used my sewing thread, cotton balls and paint to add some dimension and realism to his cars and airplanes.  I bet these will be quite fantastic.  We would love to have some other miniaturists visit us and their show.  Their web site is , if you want some more info.

Talk to you later,

Mary

Northern Virginia was fortunate to have had multiple NAME

Day events in October.

Molly Cromwell held her 29th Mid-Atlantic Dollhouse Miniatures Festival in Falls Church. George & I can’t express our gratitude enough to Molly for her continued support of our Region E1, NAME and all the young miniaturists.

The Virginia State Day 2013 Committee is busy getting ready for the upcoming event, “An Asian Retreat Teahouse & Garden,” to be held on April 13, 2013. We still have space available if you have not signed up. The registration form is in this issue and on the E1 Regional website. Our Committee is working hard on having a fun-filled day. Keep a lookout at local events where the Virginia State Day 2013 prototypes will be on display. We are offering the project in both 1:24 and 1:12 scales. Forms will be on E-1 Region website. There will be Door Prizes, Raffles, and Tote Bag Favors. Lunch is provided. Maybe George will show up in a kimono! The event will be held at the Hampton Inn Glenside in Richmond Virginia. There’s Free Parking and Free Continental Breakfast for Hotel guests spending the night. Look for the Virginia State Day 2013 Flyer further in The Tattler. If you have any questions, please contact Donna at mini_nva_state_rep@

Molly Cromwell Fall Show

As you read this article, I hope you are marking your calendars for the Mid-Atlantic Dollhouse Miniatures Festival Fall Show next year. For those of you that weren’t able to attend this year, here is a little of what you missed. As you passed by the Halloween decorations and the table with all the upcoming events, exciting cruises & tours (), you saw two tall tables of exhibits. Jean Goodyear and Jane Schwarz had a fabulous display! As I passed by, they were busy answering question about their minis. Upon entering the show room, you were met by friendly and helpful dealers. There was plenty of room to view all the minis… and what a variety! There was something for everyone. In the afternoon there was a children’s program. It was nice to see familiar & new faces stop by the NAME table. We had a number of people ask about NAME membership.

Children’s Program

At Molly Cromwell Fall Show, the kids were lined up and waiting for the start of Children’s Program. The Children were seated around two tables. They were given a birdhouse, birds, benches, dog dishes and dog beds to paint. It was fun to see the many different colors & designs the children painted from stripes, poke a dots & swirls, to name a few. It was fascinating to watch were their imagination took them. Next they glued down their painted items to their patch of grass. To their delight, they were also given a mouse & a dog bone. They were able to pick out a silly dog. Where would their dog be without a leash? The younger children even had Oscar in his trash can to add to their patch of grass. A few of the younger children just wanted Oscar in his trash can.

George & I would like to thank everyone who donated to the children’s program and to FAME Club for hosting a wonderful Children’s Program.

George & I couldn’t have managed the NAME table, Children Program & Exhibits without our volunteers. A great big thank you to Jean Goodyear, Jane Schwarz, Leigh Snyder, Donna Edwards, Mary Neely, Susan Oslun, FAME Club, and all the people who donated items.

Hoping you and your family have a safe and happy Holiday Season.

On NAME DAY weekend, two of the Southern Virginia Clubs got together to build our NAME Day projects. The Virginia Miniature Enthusiasts hosted the day and invited the Peninsula Heritage Miniature Society. We all had a lot of fun.

I would like to apologize for the typo that I made in the last Tiny Tattler. The 2013 Virginia State Day will be on April 13, 2013.

HOUSEPARTY IN THE GAZETTE!

A Houseparty for Everyone…

Get ready to attend the second “Houseparty in the Gazette.” In your May/ June 2013 issue of the Miniature Gazette, there will be a complete Houseparty with all the same goodies of a regular Houseparty. If you like to do swaps, be thinking about what you want to make; if you like kits, there will be ways to order kits; if you are a scratch builder, there is plenty for you. Everyone can have a centerpiece at this convention. There will be something for everyone, and how much fun it will be if you share the experience with your clubs(s) in your region! All three scales will be represented. Here is a picture of one of the 1/2” scale centerpieces. Just how would you finish one of

these?

Donald N. Greenfield – 1942-2012

The miniature world lost a bright light on August 10, when Donald N. Greenfield, 70, had an accident with a Segway near his Middletown, PA, home that claimed his life.

Don and his wife, Mary, were trying out their new Segways when Don encountered a deep hole that caused him to be thrown on a macadam road. Although he was transported to Penn State Hershey Medical Center, he did not survive. Through the years, many folks in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and Virginia became his friends through his custom acrylic covers and structure kits that he manufactured in his basement workshop at 207 N. Spring Street.

He became devoted to the world of miniatures as he perfected the techniques for making the acrylic boxes. As a progression, he started to vendor shows through the east and at some regionals and national conventions. Don also taught roundtable classes using jigs that he designed to help with assembly. He was a life member of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts.

As new products came on the market, Don would learn all about them. He loved those kinds of challenges.

Don and Mary attended the 2012 convention in Charlotte and appeared to have a wonderful time as they participated in the fun and fellowship.

For members of Central Pennsylvania Society of Miniature Enthusiasts, Don’s passing has been a great loss. A few years ago, CPSME was on hiatus for lack of interest. Don pursued reorganizing the club and offered his home as a meeting place. For a time, Don served as president. Don’s greatest contribution was as the club’s creative director and chief instructor. Club members’ wishes became his commands. When projects would be discussed he would make them happen. Early next year, we will work on his final project of an English cottage front in a picture frame.

One year, club members wanted to learn about electricity and working with wood. Using a Whitledge design from a miniature magazine, Don led us through cutting, staining and finishing the wood of a paneled library and then electrifying it. Another project was the historic Frankenberger tavern in Mechanicsburg. He measured the building and then constructed the 1:24 scale kit. With the help of a club member, he created a kit for a Christmas market stand. He did street market stands as well. Plus he would cut our kits for previous National NAME Day events and had planned to do the ones for this year.

Don was interested in building and designing structures rather than furnishing them. Our club had the privilege of watching the mechanics as he built his displays, some of which received People Choice awards at the Philadelphia Miniaturia. He and his then wife, Sara, designed a centerpiece for the Pittsburgh National on the “Life of Pi” that is in the NAME Museum in Carmel, Indiana. He also was the creative director behind CPSME’s centerpiece for Pittsburgh, “Henner’s Lydia,” that was saved for the auction and raised more than $300 for NAME. He created the box for “The Quilting Room” that was a Houseparty Helper for Rochester Regional where Don and Mary were Houseparty Helper co-chairmen. Among his prized pieces were “A Room for All Seasons,” “No Girls Allowed,” “Old Westbury,” and the last one, “Fallingwater,” which was a major engineering feat to behold. Mary presented “Fallingwater” to be displayed at the 2012 Philadelphia Miniaturia, where Don received the People’s Choice Award for 2012.

Don was born in Reading PA and was an Environmental Engineer. He served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years. He also was employed by the Department of Environmental Resources of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He was very involved with the Civil Air Patrol. Don was preceded in death by his wives Cheryl and Sara. In addition to Mary, he is survived by two sons, Sara’s five daughters and Mary’s two sons, a twin brother, a sister, and numerous grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

Services were held in Middletown with burial with military honors at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.

Come One! Come All!

…to the Virginia State Day 2013,

“An Asian Retreat Teahouse & Garden”

If you have a friend interested in minis or maybe someone you would like to encourage in having fun with minis, get them to sign up with you for Virginia State Day 2013! The date is April 13, 2013; Registration Starts at 8:30am; the project is available in both 1” (1:12) or 1/2” (1:24) scales.

You will be putting together a Teahouse that lights and placing it into an Asian garden that you design. Think it’s too difficult? Think again! All skill levels will have a great time. Lunch is included with your registration. The event will be held at the Hampton Inn & Suites Glenside, Richmond VA. With the location in the middle of the state, it allows most people to drive to the event and not have to stay in a hotel. However, for those of you that wish to stay at the hotel we have an event rate of $99 (for 2 queens or king) or $109 (Studio) room. When you make your reservations, reference “An Asian Retreat” to receive discounted rates.

There will be Door Prizes, State Day Helpers, and Tote Bag Favors. You ask, “What are State Helpers?” They are miniature items, roomboxes, etc., that are valued at $25 or more. Tickets for them can be purchased and placed in a container for each item. Sometime during the day, a ticket will be drawn from each container. Some lucky person’s ticket will be called. Don’t forget that there will also be door prizes. Door Prizes are miniature items valued at $5 - $10. The anticipation of having your name called and seeing what a fabulous Door Prize you have won is exciting. And let’s not forget the excitement of opening your Tote Bag full of minis!!!

Start looking in the nooks and cranny for miniatures you’re not going to use? Or are you down-sizing? Donate them to Virginia State Day 2013. What a wonderful way to have your minis appreciated by other miniaturists!

If you are not able to attend, you can still be a part of the fun by donating to Door Prizes, State Day Helpers, or Tote Bag Favors. You haven’t registered? …or know someone that hasn’t registered? It is not too late. Fill out the Registration form and send it in. All of the forms are in this issue of the Tiny Tattler and on Region E-1 website.

Two Miniaturists in a BIG World!

Olivia Beard-Wall and Anita Myers trekked across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge on one of the hottest days of the summer to attend an “Expo” sponsored by Harbor Sales. Harbor Sales is the wonderful company in Sudlersville, MD, that is responsible for cutting many of the kit parts from Gatorboard (and other materials) for our State Day and other regional projects. Some of our local clubs even use them. Neither Olivia nor Anita knew quite what to expect, and when they reached Sudlersville there was no manufacturing plant in site… that is until they rolled down the window and asked! Everyone there knew exactly where it was!!! And quite a plant it is, too! You just have to know where to look!

Can you just imagine how our itty-bitty orders must match up to some of this size equipment?!!!

[pic] [pic]

Despite the fact that the warehouse was not air conditioned and very, very warm, the two ladies were like kids in a candy store, with all the jaw-dropping displays of materials and things they saw that could be adapted to our miniature use… things they didn’t even know existed!!!

The folks at Harbor Sales were very gracious and escorted the ladies through their plant. They also had an opportunity to meet with the “design team,” those folks who work in the office with our kit plans, as well as the many vendors who were there. They were even able to take home samples of some wonderful products. Harbor Sales served a very festive and delicious cookout and provided outdoor seating under tents. At the end of the day, both Olivia & Anita were worn out from walking up and down all the aisles of the huge warehouse, but with new inspiration and visions of things to come dancing in their heads!

New Club!

I just wanted to let everyone know that we have started a mini group in the Shenandoah Valley, just south of Harrisonburg. We meet every other Wednesday at my house. We would love to have some new members, so please pass the word to anyone in the area. We recently displayed some of our projects at the Massanutten Library in Harrisonburg to celebrate National Dolls House month. We also participated in the NAME day project.

3rd ANNUAL INCH BY INCH DISPLAY IS A HIT

AT LOCAL SENIOR CENTER

By Dayle Dawes

As far as we know, there are no miniaturists at the Arnold Senior Center at 44 Church Rd. in Arnold, but celebrating National Dollhouse and Miniatures Month is becoming a habit for its members, all the same. For the third year in a row, the Inch by Inch Miniature Club of Annapolis (IBI) mounted a display of small world delights for fascinated viewers during the month of October.

This annual event offers a unique up-close and personal look at the intriguing world of dolls houses and miniatures, and Center members who view these displays consistently express utter amazement that miniature homes and vignettes include so many life-like details and intriguing tiny objects.

The 2012 display, “Shop Until You Drop (A Collection of Shops in Miniature),” was under the direction of Peggy Christman and showcased a variety of miniature shops, display windows, and vendors’ carts created by IBI club members. A major highlight of this year’s offerings was a wonderful array of miniature clothing created by IBI member/artist Carolyn Hall, whose 1:12 scale fashion line was featured in the March 2011 issue of the national MINIATURE COLLECTOR magazine.

[pic] [pic] [pic]

A pair of Perfumery Shop Windows, created by Anita Myers and Sarita Speros in a class given by Sue Ann “Lady Bug” Thwaite of Monrovia, MD, was a hit with this year’s viewers. As Tiny Tattler readers know, Lady Bug’s fabulous small scale projects (some are infinitesimally small and reside in watch cases!) are both well-known and wildly popular amongst miniaturists and collectors all over the world.

[pic] [pic]

These dainty shop fronts were a fascinating showcase for more than 90 tiny perfume bottles, painstakingly hand-fashioned by their creators from a variety of fancy beads and jewelry findings. Specially-designed lighting recessed in the shop window’s ceiling brought the glittering array of bottles alive with twinkling highlights. According to Anita, the most difficult and time-consuming part of putting this marvelous piece together was “grouping the various colors and styles of perfume bottles so they complement each other.  You can't just randomly put them on the shelves … it would look like a hodgepodge.”

[pic] [pic]

Anita also contributed her mid-20th Century Baltimore corner store, which she created to “neighbor” with the 1:24 scale (1/2” = 1’) Baltimore row houses that were such a popular feature of the 2011 center display. The row houses also reflected mid-20th Century Baltimore, and boasted miniature versions of the wonderful painted window screens so prevalent in the city at that time. These little beauties were last year’s favorites amongst the Center members who grew up in or near the city, and they found this year’s corner store equally charming and evocative.

Additional shops included a wonderful Victorian Tea Room, featuring ladies of the period being served tea in “a grand manner” from the collection of IBI member Barbara Dugan. And Dayle Dawes’ antiques shop, “Auntie’s Attic,” crammed with furniture and miniature accessories of every imaginable kind (including three authentically-antique miniature bisque baby dolls), was a real treat for the eyes.

Smaller items, including a wonderful Peddler Doll and her tray full of tiny items, created by Sarita in a class with British doll artisan Alison Fleming, enhanced the presentation’s major items. Ramsey Alexander’s beautifully detailed European Christmas Market Stall is based on the “real life” markets she visited while on

a European river cruise with other miniaturists. Her flower cart and its fabulous floral creations rounded out the miniature “shopping experience.”

IBI members enthusiastically embrace the philosophy of the National Association of Miniature Enthusiasts (N.A.M.E.), which urges miniaturists to share their passion for tiny treasures. Displays like these offer the community a window into the exciting world of dollhouses and miniature collecting, and the many skills miniaturists learn and use to create wonderful settings and their contents in fascinating detail.

Inch by Inch donates roombox to “Quilts of Valor”

For the past five years, the Mother Seton Parish Quilting Angels of Germantown, MD, have been creating quilts in support of the Quilts of Valor organization for wounded and returning military. They hold a bazaar in November and usually raffle a quilt or two to raise money.  While donations of fabric are often received, the group really needs funds to purchase batting and other supplies to complete the quilts.  Carolyn Hall, a member of Inch by Inch and also The Quilting Angels, suggested that Inch by Inch create a roombox to help raise funds at the bazaar.

Peggy Christman, also of Inch by Inch, agreed to co-chair the activity with Carolyn, and together they oversaw the creation of a gorgeous roombox for some lucky raffle winner! Below are the results:

It’s been a busy few months for the members of Inch by Inch, who also created and donated a centerpiece to the 2013 NAME National Convention in Tucson. But we’re not going to show pictures of that… just yet! It’s a surprise!!!

Mount Vernon Miniatures Club

~ Celebrating their 20th Anniversary ~

Fifteen members of the Mount Vernon Miniatures Club International, in Alexandria, VA, celebrated the club’s 20th anniversary at a festive gathering in September. The club was founded in September 1992, when Laurie Sisson requested a list of names of northern Virginia miniaturists from NAME and invited them to her home for a meeting.

Under Laurie’s continuous leadership since then, the club has co-hosted NAME houseparties, put on exhibits at a local retirement community and at the International Plastic Modelers’ Society Show. They hosted a workshop for Girl Scouts to celebrate the 100th anniversary of scouting, and are planning exhibits in December at the John Marshall Library (where the club holds its meetings), in the atrium of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Reston, VA, and at an antique toy show at a local historic site. The club has been a NAME Blue Ribbon Club for many years.

Mount Vernon Miniatures Club International earned the last part of its name by keeping members who have moved to other countries but return to visit occasionally from Africa and France. We collect everything, including people!!

Wee Friends & Inch by Inch

on a Field Trip

[pic]

Barbara Dugan, a member of Inch by Inch Miniature Club, arranged a day-long outing for the members of two clubs in Annapolis. A goodly representation the Wee Friends and the Inch by Inch Miniature Clubs met at her home, enjoyed a brief lunch and then took off for a tour of the Jonas Green House, escorted by “Squire” D.L. Smith.

[pic] [pic]

The Jonas Green House is one of the oldest buildings in Annapolis and dates back to the early 1700’s; with earlier sections going back as far as the 1690’s! Jonas Green was a cousin and an apprentice to Benjamin Franklin. Upon the death of Jonas, his wife, Anne Catharine, carried on his printing business and was the founder of The Maryland Gazette, a local newspaper that is still in operation today! Members of the two clubs were given a wonderful tour by the current owners, Randy & Dede Brown, descendants of the original Jonas Green family. What an incredible experience and quite a treat that was!

From the Jonas Green House, the group drove to Crownsville where The Rising Sun Inn is located. It is the home of the Ann Arundel Chapter of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). The Inn was used during the 1700’s for travelers who made their way from Baltimore to Annapolis. Although the building does not have original artifacts or furnishings, it does contain many lovely antique and period pieces. But the icing on the cake is that it is the home of the Jonas Green Dollhouse! ...a replica of the house the group had toured earlier that day!

Needs a good home:

A contemporary wooden doll house built about 1976, with open plan first floor, removable second floor and roof sections, and some custom furnishing pieces. Sits on a 4’ x 4’ base on casters. Stored in a dry place since the girl it was built for has grown up and moved to the west coast.

Needs some paint and new wallpaper.

Tiny Tattler - Region E-1

Winter 2012 Anita Myers, Editor

From your Regional Coordinator…

Fall is here and with it comes Halloween,

Thanksgiving and Christmas, along with quite

a few miniature events in our Region. (Please check the calendar of events and spend a few minutes including them in your personal agenda.)

We welcomed autumn with our annual fall yard sale in Westminster on September 22. Our public attendance was up and most of our vendors left with smiles on their faces. It was great to see so many miniaturists from Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania. Romaine sold estate items from our trip to New York and Massachusetts. If you weren’t there, you missed a great opportunity to get some amazing items.

Many of us will be traveling to the Philadelphia Miniaturia at the Crowne Plaza in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Several of us will be attending pre-event workshops as well as NAME night, where there will be plenty of things to do. Our very own Romaine Eyler will be doing a nifty make-and-take project. It is always a fun time! A few of us will be attending the preview on Friday evening. Remember, NAME Night on Thursday and the preview on Friday evening, November 2nd. The show runs until Sunday, November 4th. In the exhibit room, check out the centerpiece for the House Party in the Gazette – the “Over the Hill Retreat.” I am trying to decide whether to make it a typical “Man Cave” or a garden shed – either one will be fun. We hope to see you there.

The Christmas Cheer committee is busy getting things ready for our Holiday Party to be held at Bullocks on December 1st. If you are making totebag favors, please let Jayne Volpitta know. Her email is jvolpitta33@. Jayne needs them as soon as you can get them to her so she can finish the container. Deadline for getting the registration in is November 10th so we can let Bullock’s know how many are coming. (We have extended the date since Hurricane Sandy came our way.) I have seen some very unique centerpieces! Way cool!

Please remember to register for Virginia State Day if you have not already done so. We are looking forward to a great time. I know we all celebrate in our own way, so I hope that you and your families have a wonderful Christmas celebration.

Blessings,

Olivia
