LEARNING TO LOOK

LEARNING TO LOOK

INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING THE ARTSTOR LAPTOP

1. You will need the following items:

a) Laptop. We have three laptops in Jan Schorr’s office (Fox Meadow library) dedicated to Learning to Look

b) Power cord for the laptop. (Laptop batteries are not reliable; you should ALWAYS use a power cord to ensure an uninterrupted LTL lesson.)

c) “Pigtail” cable that connects the laptop to the arm

2. The power cord and pigtail should be attached to the laptop when you pick it up. If not, there are extras next to where the laptops are stored in Jan Schorr’s office.

3. It is best to check ahead of time with your teacher to make sure you have an arm and screen in the classroom prior to starting your LTL lesson. Many classrooms have a Smart Board permanently affixed to the wall above their screen. Other classrooms may have a screen that pulls down to project on.

4. Connect the laptop to the arm using the cable provided.

5. Plug in the laptop using a separate the power cord.

6. Turn on the laptop using the power button above the F10 key on the upper right corner of the keypad.

7. You will see a prompt box with the APPLE logo, ‘MAC OS X’ and ‘FM Learning to Look’. Type ‘art’ in the password box and hit the ‘enter/return’ key or click on ‘Log In’.

8. A page will come up that has five icons across the middle, labeled respectively:

LTL Grade1.prs

LTL Grade2.prs

LTL Grade3.prs

LTL Grade4.prs

LTL Grade5.prs

9. Double click on the icon for your grade level. The ArtStor Buddha will appear briefly and then your grade’s images will begin to load. NOTE: The laptop is slow, so please be patient. Repeated clicking while the computer is working will just make it slower and could cause it to freeze up.

10. Your grade’s LTL paintings and sculpture will appear as thumbnails (the ‘image palette’) across the bottom of the screen. Double click on the image you need and it will appear in full screen format, with a small tool bar in the upper left corner.

11. You can zoom in on any area of the image by putting the cursor on the area of interest and clicking - - the more you click, the closer it will zoom. If you move the cursor to another part of the image and click, the zoom function will continue in that area.

NOTE: A few of the images do not zoom or only partially zoom. These are images that were not originally a part of the ARTstor database and were added by Learning to Look to complete the image palette. We will not be able to correct this until we are able to replace the images with

higher resolution alternatives.

12. To return to the full screen format of an image, click on the icon on the tool bar while holding down the [shift] key at the same time.

13. To return to the image palette, click on the icon and select another image by double-clicking on that image.

14. To move back and forth between images in the image palette without going back to the whole palette, click on either of the arrows (“◀”or “▶”) on the toolbar.

15. To compare two paintings side-by-side, click on the icon on the toolbar. The OLV will automatically bring up the image that you were viewing and the next image from the image palette queue.

You can choose which image you want on each side (the toolbar for the left image will be in the upper left; for the right image, in the lower right) to find the image you want. Click on an image on either side and then use the arrow keys on the computer keypad to move the images around within the sides.

16. To compare two paintings one above the other, click on the icon on the toolbar. All the other instructions under #17 above apply.

17. To go back to a full screen of one image, click on the icon on that image’s toolbar.

18. To display brief information about the image (e.g., the title, artist, year completed), click on the icon on the toolbar. To display full information, click the icon a second time, and to remove the information, click the icon a third time.

19. To return to the blank screen with the full image palette, click on the icon on the toolbar
