Aerial Imagery for Florida Counties

[Pages:3]Aerial Imagery for Florida Counties

As Florida Counties move towards Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data preparation for Next Generation 9-1-1, a necessary resource to have is high-quality/high resolution aerial imagery of your county. High-quality/high resolution aerial imagery will help to ensure that your data meets and/or exceeds NENA Standards as well as the high level of accuracy needed for effective and efficient emergency response.

While researching numerous cost-effective ways to provide rural counties with high resolution/high quality aerial imagery, Akimeka discovered FDOT provides aerial imagery which can be downloaded at "no cost" to any county in the state. At first glance, the available imagery was at a 12" resolution which meets NENA Standard 02-014, Appendix B ? Orthoimagery Specifications. However, further research and contact with the FDOT revealed that they just started providing aerial imagery at a much higher 6" resolution, which exceeds NENA Standard 02-214.

The FDOT flies one-third of the state each year, which means every county will find new imagery available (for their county) every 3 years. While large counties may require annual aerial imagery updates since their topography changes frequently, rural and medium counties may not have funding available to acquire high quality/high resolution imagery, which can cost upwards of $25,000 for a single rural county. Since the topography of rural and some medium counties does not necessarily change much over a 3 year period, the FDOT aerial imagery is an ideal, cost-effective resource for them.

To access/use the FDOT aerial imagery, counties will need to have the following:

A GIS System (ArcGIS, MapInfo) Available Storage (storage capacity will be dependent on the file size of each individual county) Internet Connection Expertise to adapt imagery to your current GIS needs (in-house GIS department, or outside

consultant)

For your convenience, Akimeka is sharing the FDOT website and instructions for downloading your county's available aerial imagery in this document.

10. Select media as "File"

11. Select delivery method as "FTP"

12. Purpose: put "Law Enforcement" here

13. Additional Comments: State what you are using it for--GIS for 9-1-1

14. Press "Submit" A success screen will pop up to let you know your order went through

? Once FDOT has processed your order (few hours) they will send you a link to FTP the imagery down from. It will come in a large ZIP file. These files are typically at least 4-20+ GB so make sure you have room.

? Click the link and look for your browser to start downloading. (you can also use an FTP client)

? Be sure you don't click the link too many times as you'll start multiple downloads

? Your data's size will dictate how long it will take, but most imagery takes from 4-10 hours depending on the size of the county and the bandwidth on your network

? It's advised to start the download before you leave to go home so that it can run overnight. In the example here, the file size was 15.5 GB and was scheduled for approximately 4 hours.
