A Message from the President

2020 was certainly--wait for it--an unprecedented year for all of us. Through the extraordinary challenge of shutdowns, social distancing, and mask wearing, the Maryland asphalt industry showed immeasurable resilience. Although most of the country operated at home to remain safe, our industry fulfilled its essential purpose ? maintaining transportation infrastructure. In many instances, we utilized the decreased traffic volume to do our work, swiftly and efficiently.

Now that we have moved into 2021, we cannot confidently say we are out of the woods. In fact, in the wake of what will hopefully be the epilogue of the COVID-19 pandemic and the disastrous impact it had on human life and our economy, as well as existing issues with the Maryland transportation budget, we are looking at a significantly trying time for our industry. I am resolute, however, that we can meet this with the unique and important attributes of our trade.

With the Biden-Harris Administration, climate change will become a major topic of focus, with key metrics in resilient and sustainable product qualities. Thankfully, the asphalt industry shines in both. We use more recycled product in our mixes than ever before. According to the latest industry survey by NAPA in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the asphalt industry reclaimed 97 million tons of RAP for future use, saving enough landfill space to fill up Dallas' AT&T Stadium--the largest stadium by volume in the U.S--15 times. The industry is further responding with rejuvenators and with other agents to keep our recycled materials strong and long-lasting.

In addition to its environmentally-friendly qualities, asphalt pavement lends itself to swift speed of construction in Maryland. Our industry can respond to disasters that damage our roads and inhibit the flow of transportation, putting down new and pristine pavement in a matter of hours.

Furthermore, a principal asset of the Maryland asphalt industry is its legacy. We have several companies whose leadership spans several generations, with future generations rising up the ranks. These generations take pride in their work and their community, an attribute that cannot be replicated by large national or multinational companies.

On behalf of our members, we will continue to beat the drum of the importance of the product and service that our members provide to our communities by advocating with legislators for additional funding for surface transportation through reform as well as by opposing legislation that might otherwise hurt asphalt and associated businesses.

2021 will be a year for growth and challenge, but with our transformative materials as well as the enduring family businesses that provide safe and smooth roads for all Marylanders, I am hopeful. I look forward to seeing the Maryland Asphalt Association and its members shine in this new year.

Sincerely,

G. Marshall Klinefelter
