College Football Stadiums
College football has become a fall tradition around the country. Its popularity can be seen through the stadiums themselves. Increasing attendance at these football games, often over one hundred thousand people, has warranted an almost constant state of expansion. The five biggest college football stadiums have jostled positions on the list numerous times as addition after addition is built to increase seating capacity. The largest stadiums have not been able to go more than ten years without adding on. Desperate for seating, one school cut its stadium into sections, raised it eight feet by hydraulic jacks, and inserted precast seating forms within its inner circle. Some schools have even made "seating adjustments," making bleacher seats narrower to accommodate more people.
Although expansion plans are in the works for several stadiums, the following table shows the current top five college football stadiums by seating capacity.
University University of Michigan University of Tennessee
UCLA Penn State University Ohio State University
Stadium Michigan Stadium Neyland Stadium
Rose Bowl Beaver Stadium Ohio Stadium
Seating capacity 107,501 102,854 102,083 93,967 89,841
In Exercises 1-4, write and solve an addition or subtraction equation to answer the question.
1. How many seats would have to be added to Beaver Stadium for it to have as many seats as Michigan Stadium?
2. How many seats would have to be added to Neyland Stadium to make it the largest college football stadium by seating capacity?
3. Many lists do not include the Rose Bowl because it is not actually on a college campus. With that consideration, the University of Georgia's Sanford Stadium holds the fifth spot. Sanford Stadium has 3724 fewer seats than Ohio Stadium. What is the seating capacity of Sanford Stadium?
4. The largest stadium in the world is Marcana Municipal Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It can seat 47,499 more people than Michigan Stadium. What is the seating capacity of Marcana Municipal Stadium?
