Bing MapsFact SheetJuly 2013Microsoft Corp. designed Bing to help people overcome search overload and go from finding to doing. Bing Maps is an immersive mapping experience that brings search to maps, providing a limitless canvas for customers to accomplish their location-based tasks online through new types of imagery, relevant content recommendations, map apps, and driving, walking and public transit directions. Bing Maps featuresInnovative and engaging imagery. Bing Maps shares information through engaging imagery using Photosynth and HTML5 technology, including aerial and road views as well as Streetside imagery.Streetside imagery. Streetside imagery enables customers to experience Bing Maps from street level. In addition, Streetside imagery in some markets is enhanced to provide street-level panoramas that allow people to take a virtual walk up and down the street to see neighborhoods and find businesses. As people slide the street-level imagery sideways, the view of the sidewalk is seamlessly constructed to include an overlay of business listings, street names and store fronts.Streetside imagery is collected using a 360-degree camera typically mounted on a car or SUV that also incorporates laser scanners to help Microsoft build a physical model of our environments. At this time, Streetside imagery includes street-level imagery from over 100 U.S. metro areas, along with more than 20 metro areas across the U.K. and France. In addition, we are actively collecting in Spain, Germany, Finland and the U.S., which will soon be added to our growing offerings. Imaged areas include core business districts, highways, main arterials and some residential locations for each market.Dynamic imagery. The dynamic labels beta is an innovative map navigation that allows for quick zoom to a region or location on the maps with just a few clicks, making it easier to identify and explore areas or neighborhoods of a city. Zooming out takes a single click using the breadcrumb trail at the top left of the map.Aerial imagery. Aerial imagery enables customers to experience Bing Maps from a detailed top-down view of the world, by overlaying satellite imagery onto the map that can be viewed from distances of 5,000 kilometers to 5 miles. Aerial imagery also highlights roads and landmarks for easy identification.Global Ortho imagery. This two-year initiative was an ambitious mapping project that involved the collection of aerial imagery for every square inch of the continental United States and Western Europe at 30-centimeter resolution, which is much more detailed than our Aerial satellite imagery, and sets a new standard for map imagery. With this unique aerial imagery approach, Bing Maps users can trust Bing Maps to provide the same experience, brilliance, high resolution and accuracy regardless of where they search in the United States or Western Europe.Bird’s Eye view. Bing Bird’s Eye imagery is typically captured at a 40-degree angle and provides incredible detail, particularly of buildings and landmarks. Bing originally rolled out Bird’s Eye view in December 2005, and it’s now available worldwide. Bird’s Eye imagery is viewable on the Web, the Bing Maps app for Windows 8, and on mobile for Windows Phone 8, Android and iOS.Spatial search. Through spatial search, Bing delivers a more useful and immersive platform that lets people explore, discover and decide. Applications include the following:Interior Views. Interior Views provide an experience identical to Streetside imagery, but they extend beyond places vehicles can go and allow people to see inside local restaurants and businesses with 360-degree panoramic views. These views are accessible from local search results and in the thumbnail strip on certain businesses’ local listing pages. Whether exploring Seattle’s Pike Place Market or a favorite theme park, Bing Maps provides the most immersive experience of the place. This feature is currently available in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Seattle with plans to expand this year.Venue Maps. By teaming up with Nokia, Bing Maps is able to offer nearly 4,700 Venue Maps in 59 countries across the world, including interior maps of malls, airports, casinos and shopping districts. Since their launch in November 2010, Bing Venue Maps have been explored millions of times and are used by thousands daily. Some of the most popular categories in the U.S. include shopping districts like Times Square and Fifth Avenue in New York, casinos in Las Vegas, and the largest malls and busiest airports.Shopping Mall Maps. Bing features detailed Shopping Mall Maps for thousands of major malls across North America, Europe and Asia, allowing users to view individual stores, layout, parking, ATMs and entrances, as well as many other mall services — all within Bing Maps. In the U.S., browse 1,682 malls and 29 shopping districts. Airport Maps. Airport Maps give people everything they need to navigate their travels, including information on parking garages, ticket counter locations, terminals and gates, baggage claims, currency exchange, and more. The maps also feature a sortable directory of airlines, cafes and restaurants. Currently, there are airport maps for more than 100 airports in the U.S., covering most of the medium and large-hub airports.WorldWide Telescope. This application allows customers to literally see what’s above, with constellations, planets and stars coming to life in Bing Maps as they appear in the real world.Bing and Nokia mapping relationshipMicrosoft and Nokia have created a joint map design available on Bing Maps, Nokia Maps and Windows Phones. The combined map style brings key elements from Microsoft’s modern design style, including strong typography, improved readability and a clean user interface, to help people find and use mapping information more quickly. Microsoft uses Nokia’s mapping services as the basis for mapping experiences across PCs and mobile devices. Working with Nokia on a co-branded search and mapping service gives Bing greater scale and a reliable Web mapping platform to deliver great innovations to customers. In addition to participating in the joint map design, Microsoft is updating Bing Maps with Nokia’s vector data, which means more mapping coverage in a number of countries around the world.AvailabilityBing Maps is available at Bing Maps on Twitter at Bing Maps on Facebook at the Bing Maps blog at more information, press only:Rapid Response Team, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, (503) 443-7070, rrt@ ................
