Health disparities in Alzheimer’s disease among Mexican Americans

Total Direct costs: $9,072,612

Total Indirect costs: $3,260,943

Total Cost: $12,333,556

Project Summary: The current study is designed to examine the biological pathways associated with health disparities in MCI and AD among Mexican Americans. The project will test the hypothesis that metabolic and depressive factors are more strongly related to the younger age of onset of MCI/AD among Mexican Americans as opposed to vascular/hypertensive and APOE4 factors among non-Hispanic whites. The project will also test the accuracy of our blood-based screening tool for AD among this community-based cohort of n=1000 Mexican American and n=1000 non-Hispanic white adults and elders.

R01AG058525 (O’Bryant, Rissman) 09/15/17 – 06/30/2022

A blood test for screening into Alzheimer’s prevention trials

Role: CoI

Total Costs: $2,826,540

Project Summary: The current project is designed to determine if our blood based biomarker profile of AD, in combination with blood exosome markers of amyloid and tau, can predict which patients from the A4 study should have been screened forward for amyloid PET scans. The long-term goal of this study is to generate a multi-tiered screening process for prevention trials beginning with a blood test that increases access to such trials while simultaneously providing substantial cost savings in the screening process.
