The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 913.21 points, or 4.55%, to 19,173.98, while the NASDAQ composite fell 271.06 points, or 3.79%, to 6,879.52.

US stocks fell on Friday to cap the worst week for equities since the global financial crisis amid dire warnings about the economic effects of the coronavirus pandemic and as governments stepped up efforts to keep people at home.

The UK has announced an unprecedented stimulus plan to cushion the economic blow from the coronavirus, including paying a portion of citizens' wages for the first time in the nation's history.

Sales of previously owned US homes surged in February to the fastest pace in 13 years, highlighting a flurry of activity in the housing market before the economic impact of the coronavirus.

Italy banned any movement inside the country in its latest attempt to contain the coronavirus outbreak which has already killed almost 5,000.

Australian stocks slid as much as 8.5% after the government said it will enforce more stringent controls to slow the coronavirus spread after the number of cases surged over the weekend.

New Zealand's central bank has taken the major leap of introducing quantitative easing to try to limit a looming recession as the negative economic impacts of the coronavirus outbreak intensify.

Oil capped its biggest weekly decline in almost three decades as concern that global fuel demand will collapse further overshadowed talks between OPEC and Texas's energy regulator.

The US dollar was on pace to climb for the ninth straight day amid dire economic growth forecasts, even as central banks took additional action to relieve liquidity and dollar-funding pressures.
