Nica Times - Highlights of Fall 2012

After some time at home celebrating Thanksgiving with friends, we have started the annual Youth Directors' training which will be followed by the Sunday School Conference. We are thankful to have Amber-Drew back with us again this year and are awaiting our nieces, Polly and Kayland, who will arrive tomorrow. When we explained Thanksgiving to Peanut and asked her what she was thankful for, she said "our helpers." That applies, of course, to all of you as well.

Juancito receives a royal farewell from family, friends & neighbors as he embarks for a trip to the US for 3 weeks. He was invited by a

church youth group. Maria Dilia and Svellana also received visas to travel in December to meet David's family (Svellana and David will

be getting married April 2013).

It was an honor for us to host Pastor Lauren and Jo Anne Helveston of the Mission Society... here Lauren addresses

Esperanza travels to Jalapa in northern Nicaragua to teach the San Diego sewing circle the art of hammock making. The women are eager learners and quickly completed a hammock which they promptly sold. Below, Pastor Bill from St. Luke's UMC in Hickory, NC, is

invited to test the finished product.

Mamalia is overjoyed at the reunion with Pat. A retired teacher from Mt. Bethel UMC in Myersville, MD, Pat spent a month living and working in San Diego last

February. This month she and her husband, Pastor Ron, went back to San Diego to visit her students, the

teachers and her two host families.

Through Pat and the help of Mt. Bethel UMC and Boonsboro Elementary School and Mt. Lena UMC of Boonsboro, MD, the school in San Diego was able to

get lots of textbooks as well as library books. School director Maria Azucena and teacher Nohemi

look over a small portion of the books.

The CHE (Community Health Evangelism) program is developing in San Diego with the assistance of Darling and Hermano Chico who travel to San Diego from Managua once to month to share their knowledge of community development.

Diego and intern David

WHAT DID WE DO FOR FUN?

After nearly two months of treatment, little Diego was released from a rehab facility in Managua to return home with his mother, Masiel, to Somoto. Diego was born without the bones in his lower leg and had to have an amputation and prosthesis. The treatment was made possible through concerned friends at Carrollton First UMC, Carrollton, GA, including their youth team.

As this year comes to a close, we reflect on this last year and give thanks for the continuing evolving relationships and projects, all made possible through your generosity. Our projects (which go through Acts 1:8) are generally well funded. Our personal support which allows us to live and work here in Nicaragua (it goes through The Mission Society) is often tight. As you give thought to any end of year giving, please consider making a donation to The Mission Society toward our support. Donations may be made as a pledge or one-time gift online at people/hopkins or by sending a check to: P.O. Box 922637, Norcross, GA 30010-2637 Please designate check ?
