General Information

Data processing is the second semester class in the Perkins Academy sequence of courses offered on all tracks. It is as elective class and not required for graduating JMHS. Students taking this class should have completed Introduction to Computers with a grade of “C” or higher. This course requires grade level reading skills in order to comprehend that sometimes-difficult technical material. As in the first semester class, students are required to sign the District AUP, which states guidelines for proper and improper computer usage behavior. Students are expected to have mastered basic functions of computer use, particularly office applications, internet navigation, and basic file management.

Classroom Hardware

The course is taught with Mac G3 and G4 computers using an Apple-Talk network that is connected to the school wide network connected through the district router to the world. Students will be given an authentication name and password during the first week of classes in order to access the class network and create and save files. Marshall HS Internet is filtered at the district level, which means many web sites students use from home are not accessible, most notably email services. It will be mandatory for all data processing students to qualify for a school provided email account hosted by . Room 201 is also equipped with digital cameras, laser printers, and LCD projector.

Scope of Course

Data Processing may not be the best course title since much of the class focuses on basic web design. The course is divided into two halves. The first two months students will learn basic HTML coding using the Simple-Text text editor. They will also individually establish a free online web host for individual Home Page that they will build and maintain on a daily basis. The second half of he course is dominated be a graphics program called Fireworks that will be used as an advanced tool in manipulating images and creating web pages. This web site will both teach the student to become their own web master and create a location for each student to maintain an online high school portfolio. This Portfolio will contain all Data-Pro. lessons as well as other selected exemplary coursework in a digital format. Examples of this work are available linked to Mr. Zanotti’s teacher page at . Student will also utilize the keyboarding tutor to increase their speed, greatly enhancing their productivity in HTML coding.

Perkins Academy

Students enrolled in this course will gain the benefit of having a second (Perkins) counselor who is dedicated to helping each student reach their educational and career goals.
