HOW A BILL BECOMES A LAW PROJECT

It is time to put all that you have learned into action! Think about our city, province, and country…what could we change to make this a better place to live?

Here’s what you will do:

1. Draft a bill you would like to see become a law.

2. Introduce bill to the House of Commons or the Senate.

3. Participate in committee action for all bills.

4. Be prepared to debate your bill and amend it if necessary.

5. Vote on bills.

Examples of Bills:

• Bill C-279 : All people should be treated with dignity no matter what their gender identity is (no gender discrimination)

• Bill C-38 – Same sex couples allowed to be married in Canada

• Bill C-51 - broadened the authority of Canadian government agencies to share information about individuals easily to combat terrorism

• Bill 18 – Schools should be safe an inclusive (this includes cyberbullying and gender/sexual orientation harassment)
