Rich’s lines suggest a deep dive into what we bring to cross-cultural encounters (“here”) as our starting point; we are in the center of our practice. The multiple social identities and roles we occupy deserve examination as we aspire to fluency in multiple cultural contexts. Then the dispositions, knowledge, and skills necessary for multicultural competency – what the literature identifies as an “intercultural mindset” - can be acquired and practiced. Participants in this session will be able to:Probe their consequential mental frameworks and paradigms on cultural differencesDeconstruct early scripting, pervasive imagery, and unconscious biases that impact themIdentify behaviors that limit their effectiveness across culturesUnderstand alternative behaviors to adoptWe will engage in shared learning, activities, reflection, and discussion during the three-hour session.
