INTRODUCTION

Joseph, God’s chosen servant, is standing at center stage in this series of lessons. He is often referred to as “The Dreamer” because of the way God chose to reveal His plans through him. Beloved, last week we discovered how God preserved Joseph from envy and certain death at the hands of his blood brothers. Now we continue to realize that he is under God’s protective preservation, but more is revealed concerning Joseph the Dreamer. God has built a hedge of preference or great influence about him. As we prepare for Chapter 41, let us overview some facts that will prepare us for this week’s encounter which I entitle: “God’s Preference of Joseph the Dreamer.”

Joseph was sold into Egyptian slavery according to Genesis 37:36, and now we discover that he was not only a son of preference by his father Jacob (Genesis 37:3), but the favor of God gave him preference everywhere:

o Preference in Potiphar’s House. Genesis 39:1-12

o Preference with the keeper of the prison. Genesis 39:21-23

o Preference among fellow prisoners. Genesis 40:9-19 (This preference follows him to the Palace of Pharaoh of Egypt. Genesis 41:1-57)

“Now” you may ask, “how did Joseph get into all of these places?” The answer is simply, “God’s providential will.” With the highpoints of H. L. Wilmington’s outline, “Revelation, Remembrance, Review, Rendering, Recommendation and Reward” let us examine “God’s Preference of Joseph the Dreamer.”

My Anticipated Power Points:

• The Revelation of Pharaoh’s Dreams. Genesis 41:1-8

• The Remembrance of the Cup Bearer. Genesis 41:9-13

• The Review of Pharaoh’s Dreams. Genesis 41:14-24

• The Rendering of Pharaoh’s Dreams. Genesis 41:25-32

• The Recommendation of Joseph to Pharaoh. Genesis 41:33-36

• The Reward of Joseph by God’s Providence. Genesis 41:37-46

LESSON OUTLINE

“God’s Preference of Joseph the Dreamer”

I. The Revelation of Pharaoh’s Dreams. Genesis 41:1-8

The Pharaoh of Egypt had two dreams that disturbed him greatly (please read them) and none of his wise men could grant him an interpretation.

II. The Remembrance of the Cup Bearer. Genesis 41:9-13

While Joseph had been cast into prison in Egypt for an unjust accusation, he met Pharaoh’s baker and butler (cup bearer) who had been placed there in Pharaoh’s anger. They both had dreams that troubled them, and Joseph by God’s wisdom, was able to interpret their dreams. The only request Joseph asked of the butler was that when things would become favorable for him, that he would remember Joseph. Two years passed, and Joseph was forgotten until Pharaoh’s wise men could not interpret Pharaoh’s dream. Then the cup bearer remembered Joseph, still in prison!

III. The Review of Pharaoh’s Dreams. Genesis 41:14-24

Joseph is now summoned by Pharaoh, is cleaned, shaved, dressed for court, and brought before Pharaoh. Remember, it was his dreams that made his brothers envious of and hateful toward Joseph, selling him into slavery (Genesis 31:5- 11). But God’s gift is never to be taken lightly, but to be used for His glory!

IV. The Rendering of Pharaoh’s Dreams. Genesis 41:25-32

Joseph, who had been sold into pagan slavery since the age of 17, never forgot the integrity of his relationship with the true God! Joseph gives the glory unto God in Pharaoh’s presence, something we should not be ashamed to do in this pagan, compromising society in which we live! He then interprets the two dreams of Pharaoh as God saying that what was about to happen was to happen quickly. Egypt’s leader was being used by God to know the future famine that could overtake the land after seven years of great prosperity; seven years of plenty and then seven years of hardly anything! Joseph reiterates to Pharaoh that what God was about to do would happen very quickly! vs. 32

V. The Recommendation of Joseph to Pharaoh. Genesis 41:33-36

Joseph not only knew what God was about to do, but he warned Pharaoh how to prepare for the best and worst of things. Paul in Romans 10:14 asks, “How can men hear without a preacher?” Beloved, God always has a mouthpiece for every people, if they would only listen and take heed. Joseph suggested that during the seven years of plenty, Pharaoh would have a wise man of discretion stockpile 20% of his harvest against the seven years of famine.

VI. The Reward of Joseph by God’s Providence. Genesis 41:37-46

Joseph’s life of preference is revealed at its highest level. This dreamer of God is given a place of great honor. God showed him in dreams (Genesis 37:5-11) that he was divinely favored and preferred above his brothers for God’s service. Now because of his faithfulness to God’s providence, his dreams are being fulfilled.

To him who was sold into slavery and slammed into prison, hope was hopeless. But God did for him what only God can do. He is the hope for the hopeless, and Joseph received the blessing of Abraham on his posterity. Given a wife Asenath who bare two sons: Manasseh whose name meant “one given to help me forget all my toils” and a second son, Ephraim, whose name meant “God’s fruitfulness in my affliction.” Beloved, Joseph’s life is the greatest rags to riches story of all times. But it was not a fairy tale, but the life story of a man of integrity and God’s design fulfilled through his faithfulness.

CLOSING

Life today seems to be full of instant things (grits, oatmeal, potatoes, coffee, etc.). People expect to receive instant success and gratification, but remember beloved, the words of Isaiah 40:31, “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

There are at least two passages from Proverbs that highlight the preference of God on Joseph’s life: Proverbs 18:16 – “A man's gift maketh room for him, and bringeth him before great men.” And Proverbs 16:7 – “When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him.”

Beloved, Joseph encourages me to remain faithful to the will of God in my life, in spite of the turmoil of adversity. Praise the Lord!
