Recommendations:

• The Value of Inquiry was not adopted by the Task Force

• Revisions were discussed in detail to the Mission statement and a final discussion draft agreed upon.

• The Statutory Purpose should be included as a standing component of the Vision, Values, and Mission statements.

• Minor edits were made to the Value statements.

• The Task Force agreed to a meeting on Tuesday, 13 February, 9:00a East Campus Room 8-105D to review college-wide comments.

Detailed Discussion of the Vision, Values, & Mission Draft

• The Value of Inquiry was suggested for addition.

o “Inquiry by examining knowledge and research in open, critical discussions, acting decisively on the best evidence available, and assessing our results toward continued improvements.”

o Advocacy for the addition noted that the Value was a process to which the college adhered, both in classroom and organizational learning. Its addition would define that process clearly.

o Those critical of the addition noted that there was no direct suggestion of the Value in the Learning Day responses from the Visioning session. There was some question of the addition of a process into the Value statements. Finally, the tenor of the addition was already suggested in the mission statement – “inquiry, results, and excellence” – and other Value statements – TVCA and “the courage to act.”

o The Task Force did not recommend the addition.

• Review of the Mission statement

o It was felt that the first sentence reflected components of the Statutory Purpose and was cut.

o The Statutory Purpose should be included as a standing component of the Vision, Values, and Mission statements.

o “Achievable” was cut from the second sentence, as it suggested a lack of challenge in “opportunities.”

o The suggestion that “continuous improvement” be added to the series after “excellence” was not adopted. Consensus was that “results” and “excellence” intimated at that improvement process.

o “Throughout our communities” replaced “Central Florida” to more clearly indicate the opportunities and challenges facing the college.

o There was an extended discussion on the final sentence, particularly, “public, civic, and workforce organizations.” Those partnerships are stated in the Statutory Purpose and hinted at in the Values statements. It was felt, though, that removing the sentence would leave the Mission a statement limited to our learning mission. It would not reflect the strength Valencia provides to and receives from our local, physical community. Consensus was that the final sentence be moved to first. This allowed the Mission statement to end with “inquiry, results, and excellence” and mirror the strong ending to the Values statements “the courage to act.”

• Final edits to the Values statements

o The repetition of the word “embracing” in both the Mission and the Values statements was discussed. It was felt that “fostering” would be more accurate in the Diversity value, as it suggested promotion/adoption/union of the ideal, rather than an attachment to it. “Embracing” remained in the Mission statement, as it was repeated several times in Visioning session responses.

Communications Strategies & Suggestions

The dedicated work of the Communications Task Force has created an effective model for sharing the discussion draft of the Vision, Values, and Mission statements. David Rogers, as Special Assistant, Learning-Centered Initiative, is most appropriate to garner and record feedback.

Follow-up Evaluation and Review

The original deadline for VVM review was scheduled as Thursday, 15 Feb. This precedes the combined Learning Leadership Team/Planning Council Retreat on Friday, 16 Feb, and the Planning Council February meeting on Thursday, 22 Feb.

The Vision, Values, and Mission Task Force will schedule a follow-up meeting to review input on the draft discussion copy.

Next meeting:

Tuesday, 13 Feb
