Institute for Healthcare ImprovementPosition SummaryVice President, Professional Development?The Institute for Healthcare Improvement () is an independent not-for-profit organization that works with health care providers and leaders throughout the world to achieve safe and effective health care. IHI focuses on motivating and building the will for change, identifying and testing new models of care in partnership with both patients and health care professionals, and ensuring the broadest possible adoption of best practices and effective innovations. Based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, IHI mobilizes teams, organizations, and increasingly nations, through its staff of more than 100 people and partnerships with hundreds of faculty around the world.?Position Summary: The Vice President (VP) of Professional Development will be responsible for building the capability of health professionals from executives to the front line and students to better lead the improvement health, health care and patient safety worldwide. This leader will oversee the design, development and execution of all professional development programming in the US and abroad and have responsibility for achieving results and financial targets. A substantial area of this portfolio will be leadership of the IHI Open School for Health Professions growth, strategy and overall operations, and relationships with students, faculty, professional societies and health care organizations.The ideal candidate for the position will achieve success by:Building partnership relationships. The VP of Professional Development will build and maintain critical external relationships with faculty, health care systems, associations, professional societies, and organizations we call Strategic Partners. Being a strong organizational leader. The VP will effectively manage, lead, and develop relationships within IHI, a complex, matrixed organization. This portfolio leader will be responsible for work within the Professional Development Portfolio and will have responsibility for managing a team of staff, faculty and professionals for IHI’s work within and outside the U.S. Being a proven manager and business leader. The VP will craft a vision to sustain and continue the growth of IHI’s Health Professional Development Portfolio. The VP will establish new faculty and organizational partnerships and opportunities, and will work with the IHI Business Team to develop new public enrollment and on-site customized programming, achieving aggressive targets, including financial one. The ability to gather market intelligence and describe IHI’s unique selling proposition will be critical.Being a curriculum design expert and faculty relationship manager. The VP will lead the enhancement and development of health care workforce programs that address the needs of the future within a climate that emphasizes learning and engagement, institutional effectiveness and programmatic excellence and creativity. The VP will ensure that programming includes the best and most appropriate content and delivery designs (in person and distance learning), engaging national and international faculty and partners. The VP will be a recognized, credible expert who can guide the development of new ideas. Providing overall leadership and vision for the continued growth, development and future of the IHI Open School for Health Professions. IHI created the IHI Open School for Health Professions to teach patient safety and quality improvement skills to the next generation of health care professionals. By means of a robust website and in-person events, the IHI Open School reaches directly to health students of all health professions, offering them the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art approaches to improving the care systems in which they will work as graduates. The VP will lead the Open School team and have specific responsibility for the Open School’s growth, strategy, operations, and relationships with students, faculty, professional societies and health care organizations.This position reports to the Senior Vice President for Business Strategy. Necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities include:Expert knowledge of improvement methods Experienced and skilled at designing and managing revenue-generating programming across multiple professions, systems and geographic settingsExcellent writing skills as well as superb interpersonal and verbal communication skills; a master at presenting information, ideas, and results is criticalAbility to work in a fast moving and, at times, intense environmentSkilled at building and maintaining relationships at all levels within the organization as well as externally with faculty, allies, professional societies and current partners, and potential partnersCandidate qualifications include:Requires significant health care, educational and program design experience with a focus on improving the quality and safety of careDemonstrated expertise and leadership in improvement requiredMinimum of 8 years experience in a team leadership role requiredExperienced educator Experience in designing and running an educational enterprise preferredExperience working in a technology or virtual environment preferredAdvance degree requiredPosition Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Entrepreneurial, innovative and strategic thinker and leader Strong leadership skills; a team builder, collaborator, mentor, and coachExcellent writing skills, as well as strong interpersonal and verbal communication skillsMust be skilled in budget preparation and fiscal management.
