COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the student to the role of the Clinical Nurse Leader by using principles of leadership in the coordination and management of complex health care systems. Focus is on effective use of self within the interdisciplinary health care environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Relate knowledge of leadership theories to the CNL role.

3. Critique the effectiveness of various modes of communication with groups and interdisciplinary teams.

4. Analyze the CNL role in the context of the health care delivery system.

5. Articulate the unique contributions of the CNL role relative to other nursing and health care professional roles.

This is a Web-based course. E-Learning in Sakai is the course management system that you will use for this course. E-Learning in Sakai is accessed by using your Gatorlink account name and password at . There are several tutorials and student help links on the E-Learning login site. It is important that you regularly check your Gatorlink account email for College and University wide information and the course E-Learning site for announcements and notifications.

Course websites are generally made available on the Friday before the first day of classes.

ATTENDANCE

Students are expected to participate in the online learning activities and discussions as listed in the course syllabus and on the course web-site. Timeframes for the posting and receiving of materials are listed in the course materials on the course, and web-site. Synchronous activities (both virtual and on-campus) may be available during the course, including group work, exam review or instructor meetings utilizing available technology. A grade penalty may be assigned for late assignments, including tests. Make-up exams may not be available in all courses.

ProctorU Information

o Major course examinations will be administered via ProctorU, a live proctoring service, to ensure a secure testing environment.

o Each student’s computer must be in compliance with Policy S1.04, Student Computer Policy and must contain a web cam, microphone, and speakers.

o Each examination will cost $22.50 per exam.

o Students go to the website and click on “How To Get Started”. This will permit students to create an account and test out their system.

o Once an instructor makes an exam available, students go online to ProctorU to schedule and pay for the exam session. Students must provide a valid email address and phone number where they can be reached during an exam.

o College of Nursing IT Support office will oversee this process and provide technical assistance.

ACCOMMODATIONS DUE TO DISABILITY

Each semester, students are responsible for requesting a memorandum from the Disability Resource Center to notify faculty of their requested individual accommodations. This should be done at the start of the semester.

This course utilizes multiple online tools to facilitate learning, including discussion board activities, online lectures/videos and social networking. In addition, there are interviewing activities conducted in health care settings.

EVALUATION METHODS /COURSE GRADE CALCULATION

20% Online presentation

10% Participation in online guided discussion activities

30% Examinations 1 and 2

40% Written assignments (1 major paper and 1 smaller paper)

Assignments/Papers will be returned within 2 weeks.
