GRADE EIGHT FRENCH Course Outline Madame Broen

REVIEW -September is spent reviewing some grade seven material

-Oral and written

CONVERSATION -Students will learn many conversational questions and be able to answer these and be able to construct a negative sentence

-Students will participate in skits and plays

-Half the class time is spent in oral activities and games

THEMES 1) Animals

2) Clothing

3) Sports

VERBS -Learn many action words that end in “ER” that relate with the above themes

-Introduction to “IR” “RE” verbs, simple future

-Continuing to work with “être” and “avoir”

PROJECTS - Various projects throughout the year matching themes

CULTURE -Music and songs both traditional and modern

-Videos filmed in Quebec and France

-Maple syrup days “Le Temps des Sucres”

-Traditional French holidays

RESOURCES -Alberta Learning –worksheets for writing practice

-Alberta Learning –CDs of oral French spoken in Canada

-French early readers from classroom and library

CONCEPTS OF LANGUAGE

CONTINUE TO DEVELOP THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:

-Masculine / feminine / plural nouns

-Articles- definite and indefinite –un, une, des, le, la, les

-Possession- mon , ma, mes, etc.

-Prepositions – sur, dans, sous, devant, etc.

-Negative sentences- ne … pas

-Expressions with avoir – J’ai douze ans.

-Expressions with faire – Il fait beau.

-Conjunctions – et, alors, quand, etc.

-Question words – qui, qu’est-ce que , combine, comment etc.

-Correct word order – une fille aimable

-Qualifying adjectives – colour,

ACQUIRE THE FOLLOWING CONCEPTS:

-Descriptive adjectives

-Qualifying adjectives- physical traits, qualities

-Adjective placements

-Possessive adjectives

-Adverbs of manner

-Forming complex sentences

-Forming paragraphs

Late or missed assignments: It is an expectation that assignments are submitted on time. As well, students missing work due to an unplanned absence are to check with Madame Broen’s Blog (madamebroen@) and keep up to date. Every effort will be made to remind students of due dates and to communicate with students whose work is still owing. Following such due process, however, students may receive a Not Handed In for work not completed within a reasonable timeline. Parents/Guardians will receive an e-mail for all NHI’s.

Plagiarism: Students who plagiarize by copying a piece of writing verbatim with the intention to take and use as their own will be dealt with in the following manner: parents will be notified and the student will receive a zero for that assignment.

MATERIALS:

-A binder to be used exclusively for French and added to in each subsequent grade

-Dividers

-Highlighters (pink and blue)

-A French/English dictionary for home and school use

Assessment and Rubrics:

The following French as a Second Language Learning Outcomes are assessed throughout the length of the course for each student and each of their submitted work. Students will be evaluated on the following stems and its specific skills outlined. Each project will have a range from 1 - 5 stems in its evaluation. Benchmarks of E-P-S-ED will be used in Homelogic throughout the term, with stems of 4-3-2-1 used for Report Cards.

A. CULTURE:

-Recognize and understand how the French language has evolved

-Recognize regional variations in expressions used by different

Francophone groups

-Compare and contrast their own way of life with those of Francophones

-Seek out information about Francophones from authentic sources for example: songs,

Websites, books, magazines

B. ORAL PRODUCTION:

- Name, list describe, ask and answer questions, give simple directions, express needs or preferences, make suggestions, give advice, give compliments, with limited spontaneity in a prepared message, expressed in the present, that is comprehensible and accurate

C. READING COMPREHENSION:

- Understand in guided situations, by identifying key words or expressions previously taught, main idea(s) or isolated details about a variety of concrete topics in authentic or adapted texts

D. LISTENING COMPREHENSION:

-Understand a classroom command, a variety of key words and expressions previously taught in grade seven, identify animals and their habits, clothing and its appearance

E. WRITTEN PRODUCTION:

- Students will use a variety of memory techniques to learn, recall, and retain vocabulary, such as repetition, memory games, word searches, flash cards, teaching peers, categorizing, illustrating and labeling, preparing drafts, websites for practice
