6th Grade

Art Objectives:

• Elements of Art: line, shape, form, color, space, texture, color, light, design, symmetry (6.1A)

• Explore and use art materials (6.1B)

• Create artwork (6.1C)

• Classical Art: The art of ancient Greece and Rome (first nine weeks)

• Gothic Art (first nine weeks)

• The Renaissance (second nine weeks)

• Baroque (second nine weeks)

Projects:

1. Create a portfolio (1 session)

Materials: Large poster board, markers, crayons, colored pencils.

2. Egypt (2 sessions)

*create an Egyptian Pharaoh mask using paper mache. Discuss role of pharaohs.

Materials: small balloons, newspaper strips, wallpaper glue, white glue, variety of

tempera paint colors

3. China (1 session)

*create an origami crane. Discuss the significance of cranes in Chinese history.

Materials: origami paper, instructions for folding cranes

4. Science (1 session)

*draw a portrait of a famous scientist (Isaac Newton, Marie Curie…) using outlines

Materials: outlines of scientists, large drawing paper, markers in flesh tones, black

Markers, pictures of scientists for students to look at

4. Gothic Art (2 sessions)

*create a gothic style cathedral model using clay. Discuss gothic architecture

Materials: model magic, stylus for carving in clay, white and black tempera paint

6. Greek (1 session)

*create models of Greek gods and titans using a variety of materials. Discuss Greek

mythology

Materials: toilet paper rolls (teacher collects), construction paper, yarn, markers,

glue

7. Greek (2 sessions)

*create a Greek shield. Discuss Greek armor

Materials: bendable twine (or something to make frame for shield), material

(burlap or thick paper) for cover, tempera paint in appropriate colors, pictures for

examples

6th Grade

Objectives:

• Recognize famous art

Projects:

1. Drawing Workshop: Cartooning (1 session)

Students learn how to create original cartoon characters and comic strips

Materials: Drawing pencils, markers, sketchbooks, comic strips

2. Drawing Workshop: Still Life (1 session)

Students learn how to create shadows, texture, and depth with drawing

Materials: Drawing pencils, sketchbooks, items for still life, flashlight (to demonstrate points of light/shadows)

3. Drawing Workshop: Perspective (1 session)

Students learn how to create distance and movement with drawing

Materials: “How to Draw…” book, pencils, sketchbook

4. Video Conference (1 session)

Get all 6th grade classes (per school) together for video conference on Great Barrier Reef

5. Watercolor (2 sessions)

Students practice drawing, coloring, creating underwater pictures. Students paint their picture using watercolors. Place plastic wrap over wet pictures to create patterns in paint

6. Drawing Workshop: Nature (2 sessions)

(Weather permitting) Students learn to use color to create light/dark, depth… when drawing nature

Materials: crayons or colored pencils, sketchbooks, pencils

7. Self Portrait (2 sessions)

Students create a self-portrait using a picture of themselves for reference. Students use contrasting colors/mediums.

Materials: Picture of student, large drawing paper, pastels, markers, pencils
