Mango Languages @ NYPL

Mango Languages is an interactive program that lets you learn a language at your own pace. The courses are conversationally based, provide lots of speaking practice, and build in many opportunities for review. You also have the option to record your speech and compare it with the narrator's.

Mango Languages currently offers courses in more than 60 foreign languages for English speakers as well as English courses for speakers of other languages.

Getting started with Mango Languages:

Go to mango Click on Connect to database Enter your 14-digit library card number.

At the Mango home page, you can click on Sign up now to create a profile using an email address, which allows Mango to track your progress. If you prefer not to sign up with an email address, you can simply click on Quick Start to begin a course without logging in.

Click on Languages on the left navigation menu. You will see a list of some of Mango's most popular or "Top languages." To see all available language courses, click on the All languages icon.

Click on the language you want to learn. For most languages, you will see one option - Mango Conversations. Further down the screen, you will see a section labeled Culture, which offers some basic background about the language. For Mandarin Chinese, Japanese, French, and English for Spanish speakers, additional film-based Mango Premier courses are available. Mango also includes several specialized courses, such as Medical Spanish and Spanish for Librarians, under Spanish (Latin America).

To launch a Mango Conversations course, click on the green Get Started button. Click on Start Learning and then click on a chapter and a lesson within the chapter. (Some courses are

organized into Units 1 & 2, then into chapters, then lessons.) Click on Start to open the lesson. You will see a list of learning goals. Click on the colored arrow tab on the right side of the slide to move to the first page of the lesson. Use the colored arrow tabs to move forwards or backwards through the lessons.

If you create a profile, you will see your dashboard when you log in to Mango. The dashboard displays the courses you have selected and how much time you have spent studying with each one. When you return to a course, Mango will ask if you want to resume the course where you left off.

Free Mobile Apps: There are also free Mango Mobile Library Edition apps available for iOS and Android devices. You will need to create a Mango Languages profile through the NYPL databases login before you can set up the free app on your device. The mobile apps allow you to download lessons and work offline, but the Voice Comparison Feature is not available.

Mango Premiere: Language Learning Through Film If you are beyond the basics covered in the Mango Conversations courses, Mango has introduced new courses based on full-length feature films. You can watch the film with or without subtitles in English and/or the original language. The "engage" mode includes scene introductions, cultural notes, explanations of words you will encounter, and other information and practice activities to help you understand and reproduce the conversations in the films. There are currently four languages available in Mango Premiere through NYPL: French, Japanese, Mandarin, and English for Spanish speakers (four films).

All classes are FREE and subject to last minute change or cancellation.
