Course Description

Students will be introduced to all driving related issues, including the Highway Transportation System, the IPDE Process, maneuvering a vehicle, and how alcohol and drugs may affect the driving experience. Students will prepare to take the NJ State Driving Exam that will allow them to prepare for a learners permit. This course is designed to cultivate a healthy attitude of defensive driving and responsible and cooperative use of America’s roadways.

Course Goals

1. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of basic skills required to drive.

2. Use technology, such as online research skills, word processing, and presentation software to complete projects.

3. Use a variety of sources to research and organize information to solve project related questions.

4. Use numeracy skills to understand speed and following distance as related to the roadway.

5. Read, communicate, and understand the language of the roadway.

Classroom Expectations

✓ Be on time – Discipline Policy will be enforced

✓ Electronics and head gear will be confiscated as per school policy

✓ Prepare for and participate in all classroom activities

✓ Use critical thinking throughout course

✓ Pass the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission test with a score of 80% or better

Materials Needed

• Notebook and folder – for notes, worksheets, and important class handouts

• Writing utensils

• Access to technology (internet, email, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word)

Grading Distribution

• Participation, Class work and Homework 10% of grade

• Quizzes 25% of grade

• Dream Car Project 20% of grade

• Individual Project 20% of grade

• State Driving Exam 25% of grade

o Every student enrolled in DE is required to take this exam. A score of 80% or better earns a state certificate.

Electronic Device Policy

According to the student handbook, the school’s Electronic Device Policy states the following:

The use of electronic devices in the classroom is subject to the approval of the teacher. Unauthorized use of these items will result in a minimum of confiscation and a maximum of a short-term suspension for open defiance. Continued violations will result in a mandatory meeting with the parent, student, teacher, and Dean of Students.
