This pathfinder will be useful in finding information about our Solar System—made up of the planets, sun, moons, Earth, space, stars, and dust. The science of learning about our Solar System is called Astronomy. This is directed towards middle school children, grades 3-5.

For an introduction to the topic, see:

• The World Book Encyclopedia of Science, by Christine Brandt. (2000) – Volume I is nothing by Astronomy!

Key Resources at a Glance

• Exploring the Night Sky by Terence Dickinson (1987)

This book is the perfect astronomy guide for beginners. It gives an unbelievable first look at space. It is clear, concise, beautifully illustrated and very “user friendly”, no matter the child’s age.

• There’s No Place Like Space: All About Our Solar System by Tish Rabe and Arstides Ruiz (1999)

This amazing book explores the wonders of the Solar System through the eyes of the beloved character The Cat in the Hat. All children will love learning and exploring new things through rhymed couplets and cartoonlike illustrations.

• The New Solar System: Ice worlds, Moons, and Planets Redefined by Patricia Daniels (2009)

This superb guide explores every corner of Earth’s planetary neighborhood, from the fiery sun to the icy realm of space. There are breathtaking photographs and detailed diagrams, which truly brings the Solar System to life.
