(Course number for enrollment: 1055)

Forest Management Applications of GIS is a course designed for in-service professionals in fire science, fire management, and other forest management related fields. It combines 3 elements: 1) Tutorials in key GIS concepts and techniques; 2) Use of ArcGIS Desktop software to develop proficiency through the completion of structured lab exercises; and 3) A GIS project demonstrating skills learned in the course. For students not having access to ArcGIS 10.X software at work, a student copy of the software can be provided, which is valid for 1 year.

Textbook Information

Required: None. Students will be provided with comprehensive labs, data and lecture notes in PDF and PowerPoint format.

Students may find helpful:

1) Getting to Know ArcGIS for Desktop (5th Edition), by Law and Collins. ESRI Press. ISBN 978-1589485105. Available through and other sources.

2) Python Scripting for ArcGIS (2nd Edition), by Paul Zandbergen. Esri Press. ISBN 978-1589483712

Course Dates, December 14 to January 8, 2021

The class begins December 14th with online sessions and requires web access, ArcGIS Desktop 10.X software and an NAU email account.
