PART I: WILD WEST SLANG WORDS

Here are numerous slang words used in the Wild West. Write a story or play using the words from the list. The story should be one page long handwritten or typed double spaced and use at least 15 of the words. Students should underline the words used.

All-fired – Very, great, immensely; used for emphasis. He is just too all-fired lazy

Airin' the Lungs - A cowboy term for cussing.

Bacon - Meaning to save one’s self from injury. To save one's bacon.

Big Jump - Death.

Boot-licker - The equivalent of a butt-kisser.

Born Days - All one's lifetime; since one was born. "In all my born days I never…

Burg - A town

Buss - Kiss.

Buzzard Food - Dead.

Caboodle - The whole thing. Also called "kit and caboodle."

Callin' - Courting.

Catalogue Woman - A mail order bride.

Cattle Baron - A cattle owner with herds of stock, welding power and influence in an area.

Chow - Food, dinner.

Chuck - To throw, by a quick and dexterous motion, a short distance.

Close-Fisted - Stingy, mean.

Conniption Fit - A fit of hysteria.

Couldn't hold a candle to - Not even close.  "She couldn't hold a candle to that beauty."

Crimany – Exclamation of surprise.

Diggings - One’s home, lodgings, or community. 

Dilly-Dally - To delay.

Feller - Fellow. "That big feller over there is the sheriff."

Fixin' - Intending. "I'm fixin' to get supper started."

Flap-Jack - A fried cake, pancake, fritter.

The Go - The mode, the fashion. “This is all the go.”'

Hitched - Got married.

Ho Down - A party or celebration

Hold Your Horses - Stay calm. "Hold your horses, we're on our way."

Hop - A dance.

Iron Horse - A Railroad train.

Jig is Up - Scheme/game is over, exposed.

Look-See - To investigate. "I think I'll go have a look-see across that hill."

Mail-Order Cowboy - This was a derogatory term used to chide tenderfoot, urban "cowboys" who arrived from the East all decked out in fancy but hardly practical Western garb.

Necessary - Outhouse, water closet; bathroom.

PART II: Wanted Poster

Create a Wanted poster of yourself or a well-known gunslinger or robber. Your picture should look authentic to the time. Add details to aid in apprehension of the outlaw: 1. realistic reward for the days of the Old West 2. gunslinger or outlaw name 3. Crime

OR

Create a baseball card of a well-known gunslinger, robber or cowboy. Provide me with their stats. Real name, nickname, birthdate, place of birth, interesting facts about career or criminal life.
