ΚΑ1 ERASMUS+ COURSE

FOR EDUCATORS & TEACHERS

“STEM Education”

Presentation

The “STEM Education” course provides STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) teachers with resources and ideas to develop more engaging science lessons and to increase students’ interest for STEM subjects and careers.

The first two days of the course will be devoted to introducing SCRATCH and its potentialities, and afterwards the participants will be engaged in studying the package Lego WeDo 2.0 and its affordances for building and programming small robots, which exemplify a specific example for integrating the STEM approach in the classroom. The next two days will be used for introducing and studying the package of Lego Mindstorms EV3. The specific package guides and allows students to build a program more advanced robots for testing their solutions for real life problems and activities. Students can be encouraged to creatively think, propose and test creative solutions for different real life scenarios and problems.

The last two days will be used for an introduction to Arduino and its different affordances and applications. Different topics concerning, for example, circuits, electronics, programming etc. Will be discussed and analysed via a series of applications that will be implemented by the participants.

Objectives

The aims of the course will be:

• To support teachers who are or will be involved in the teaching of STEM, either as a direct subject or as an element of another subject, with their delivery of computer science theories, concepts, principles and activities

• To provide teachers with concrete ideas and resources concerning STEM

• To provide teachers with an overview of the societal context and rationale for the teaching of programming

• To offer teachers a place of exchanging, with other like-minded peers, resources, solutions to real life problems and provide feedback and guidance to each other

Pre-departure

Trainees will receive a questionnaire, which will provide information on their teaching background, qualifications, and previous experience with Arduino, Lego WeDo 2.0 and EV3 Mindstorm.

Target groups

The “STEM Education” training course is addressed to school teachers, VET teachers and trainers who wish to acquire the skills for introducing new methodologies in their schools.

The Trainers

All trainers are experienced in STEM. They are experienced in European projects and in projects on how to implement STEM at school.

Labs

The lessons will take place in modern laboratories of PC with groups of three trainees / EV3 , WeDo and Arduino Uno.

Day 2: 6 hours

WeDo Lego

The package Lego WeDo 2.0 is a complete solution for introducing the STEM approach in an elementary and/or junior class. It has the basic parts for building and programming a number of different robots and it offers a lot of opportunities to guide children towards activities conducive to developing their abilities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as well as programming, while developing other important abilities, such as, reasoning and cognitive skills. Day 3: 6 hours

Lego Mindstorm EV3

* Introducing the Lego Mindstorms EV3 package (basic parts and capabilities).

* Building and programming a robot (Basic commands and activities in programming)

* Flow of control commands and programming using different

Day 4: 6 hours

Lego Mindstorms EV3

* Sensors (touch sensor, color sensor, gyro sensor, ultrasonic sensor etc.) and data operation blocks.

* Advanced programming commands and problem-solving activities via programming activities.

* Applications of educational robotics using different challenges, such as those of different international competitions, such as the World Robot Olympiad.
