ANTI-AMAGENIC-DIET

ANTI-AMAGENIC-DIET

Grounding, warm, light foods are needed, no cold, heavy, oily foods.

• Cut out as much as possible: Nightshade family (tomato - cooked is worst, pepper/capsicum - red is worst, eggplant, tamarillo, cape gooseberry, chili/cayenne, potato…), avocado, pineapple, banana, cashews, cucumber, mushrooms, pumpkin, kumara, watercress, cheeses (hard - use feta, ricotta, paneer, quark, cottage), cold milk, ice-cream, yoghurt (in winter especially - unless spices such as cinnamon, cumin, black pepper are added), brown rice (hard on digestion - use basmati), black lentils, kidney beans, red meats (eat chicken, lamb and white fish if necessary), oily fish (use light white fishmeat), margarine, sauces, white sugar and flour, peanuts, walnuts, olives, olive oil (use sunflower or ghee), yeast, vinegar, pickled/smoked/deepfried/oily/salty foods, stock cubes, sauces and spreads, soft-drinks, coffee, alcohol, energy drinks.

• Cut out these types of foods: Leftovers (food should be no more than 12-24 hours old -max- and leftovers should always be reheated, only eaten between 11am-1pm and should have spices and lemon added), frozen, microwaved, canned, pre-prepared foods, takeaways, cold drinks/milk (use milk warmed at all times, and try to drink as many drinks as possible warm or hot).

• You can eat a lot of: Light fruits and veges (leafy veges best, carrots, beetroot, all best cooked), cooked apple, orange, pear, kiwifruit, dried fruits (raisins, prunes, dates, sultanas), legumes (chick peas, yellow/red lentils), oats, basmati rice, almonds (soaked and peeled), sesame seed, sunflower seed, black pepper, black salt, mustard seed, lemon (as a seasoning), cardamon, cinnamon, coriander powder/leaf, cumin seed/powder, hing (asafoetida), fennel, fenugreek, nutmeg, thyme, fresh ginger, turmeric, fenugreek, onion, garlic (these two are excellent in aiding the digestibility of heavy meals, though don't use too much garlic), sunflower oil, ghee, honey (unheated), brown yeast free breads (rice, rye), pita bread, nuts (not too often, soaked almonds are lightest and easiest to digest), seeds, some juices, hot drinks …

*All of these spices aid digestion, use them as often as possible!!

• Drinks: Cold drinks are not good for your digestion, use hot/warm drinks as often as possible (whether in the form of teas, juices, milk, or plain water). The best is the Ginger Lemon and Honey tea, it will burn and expel ama, and this should be drunk every morning after waking and before eating - usually before shower). Another good one is hot milk, which would be best drunk at nighttime - it will aid your sleep and vata aggravation. Spices like ginger, cardamon, cinnamon and turmeric are good in the milk, along with honey if you wish. Vata, Pitta, Kapha or Calming Teas are very good to drink during the day (by Good Earth from Harvest or Lamb's Pharmacy), depending on constitution, season or imbalance.

• As many meals as possible should be freshly prepared (particularly by yourself of someone you know), and not eaten if more than 24 hours old (since cooking/preparation time). If you are eating left overs, eat them around midday and always reheat them well! Never add fresh food to leftovers..

• All meals should be hot/warm (not cold) and no cold drinks should be taken.

• Food and drink should be 15 minutes apart.

• Sit down when eating, and always eat in a calm place and a calm frame of mind. Don't eat on the run or while doing other things.

MEAL IDEAS:

• Breakfast – Creamoata or ground oats made to a porridge without coconut or fruit (you can use raisins, sultanas, and soaked almonds), with spices such as cardamon and cinnamon. Sweeten with honey (after cooking) or raw/brown/demerera sugar (or jaggery - from indian shops - it is pure sugar can juice and best sugar to use), do not use cold milk on it. Buckwheat pancakes. Cooked fruit with above spices and raisins, sultanas, soaked almonds.

• Lunch/Dinner – Light vegetable soup with ginger, garlic, turmeric, cumin, (spinach, carrot, celery, brocolli beetroot, cauli). Lentil soup. The occasional pumpkin soup is ok with spices. Stir fried vegetables (in ghee or sunflower oil) with rice. Sushi is ok occasionally, but not with cucumber and avocado, try cooked carrot with bean sprouts, fresh herbs, sesame seeds etc… Kitcharee, Dhal (very nourishing - kitcharee is mung dhal cooked with basmati rice, spices and ghee - I have a recipe if you like).

• Snacks – Snack on light foods mainly – like pumpkin and sesame seeds, soaked skinned almonds dates, raisins, sultanas, cooked fruits, try to snack less on carbohydrates and raw foods, if you need some carbs, have basmati rice, rice crackers, puffed corn etc…
