Students learn the basics of building a character through such activities as pantomime, improvisation, and effective speaking using articulation, projection, and breathing. Students also learn the importance of technical theatre and explore the use of such elements as costumes, props, and scenery. Students practice writing for the theatre and explore various theatre roles and functions. Public performances may serve as a culmination of specific instructional goals. Students will be required to attend and/or participate in rehearsals and performances outside the school day to support, extend, and assess learning in the classroom. Most rehearsals will take place during class time. The two required rehearsals/performances outside of school will be:* Dress Rehearsal for the Winter Showcase on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 (4-6pm)*Winter Showcase performance on Thursday, January 23, 2020 (6pm) 5pm call time 1st 9-Week Grading Period Content OutlineStudents focus on mastering theatre etiquette, stage direction, characterization, acting, vocal production, and memorization techniques. Students write and perform monologues and short scenes, and utilize improvisation, sense memory, and theatre games to foster an understanding of character and scene development.2nd 9-Week Grading Period Content Outline Students practice and integrate skills attained from the first nine weeks while also learning about the production aspects of theater such as props, costumes and sets, lighting design, and the various roles of a production staff. This nine-week unit will focus on preparation and rehearsal for the winter showcase performance.3rd 9-Week Grading Period Content Outline Students practice and integrate skills attained from the first semester for their winter showcase performance. Following the winter showcase, students develop acting, directing and writing skills through improvisation, staging, and scene writing. 4th 9-Week Grading Period Content OutlineStudents explore theatre history and learn about the early theaters of Greece and Rome, the Elizabethan Theater and William Shakespeare, Nineteenth Century and modern theater. This 9-week period includes a unit on William Shakespeare. The 9 weeks will culminate in a group-centered unit on children’s theatre. We are very thankful for his performing arts-geared focus in Leon County Schools. These funds will help to cover payments for scripts, busses, performance royalties, class journals, specialty costumes and props, along with other department related expenses.*** Students will also be in charge of designing and providing their own costumes for the winter performance. Immediate intervention is necessary.HOMEWORKHow often and to what extent should students expect homework in this course? How is homework evaluated?The majority of homework in this class will be memorizing monologues and scenes. Other homework includes short character or play analyses, reading a play or viewing a live or television/film performance. A portion of class time will be provided for developing characters, practicing scene work, and memorizing lines. Homework is evaluated using the same grading rubric pictured above.MAKE-UP WORK PROCEDURELeon County School Board Policy allows students to make up work within a reasonable amount of time after returning to school following an excused absence. The allotted time will be determined by district policy and communicated by the teacher to both parent(s) and the student.What procedure do students use when making up assignments due to an excused absence? How is the process different if the student has been “Pre-Excused” from school?Make – up work will be determined on a case by case basis, depending on the work missed. All tests and large/final projects must be completed. Class participation is only graded when a student is present. An excused absence will not count against a student’s class participation grade.LATE WORK POLICYWhat are the consequences for submitting work late? Will late work be accepted?Late work will be accepted, although points will be removed from the work for tardiness. For written assignments the standard is a 10 point deduction per attended school day. ASSIGNMENT RE-DO POLICY/PROCEDUREAre students allowed to re-do work for a better grade?All re-do work will be determined by the instructor based on the work in question. There will be no redo or revision on final scenes or show performances, due to the interactive nature of the work and the effect it will have on the other performers.
