Linear Measure

A line segment can be measured because it has two endpoints. A line segment with endpoints A and B can be name AB or BA. The measure of AB is written as AB. The length will also always include the unit of measure.

When measuring, all measurements are approximations dependent upon the smallest unit of measure available on the measuring instrument.

Examples 1 and 2 on page 14.

Recall that for any two numbers a and b, there is a number n such that a < n < b. This is called the betweenness of points. In other words,

Point M is between points P and Q if and only if P, Q, and M are collinear and PM + MQ = PQ

Congruent Segments are segments that have the same measure.

is the symbol for congruent. Red slashes on the figure indicate congruence.

Lengths are equal and segments are congruent. Remember that AB CD if referring to segments and AB = CD is referring to lengths.
