GCAP 631 Assignment: Comparative Case Analysis

In keeping with the spirit of postmodern thought and the readings throughout this course, it is reasonable to say that for any given client concern there are multiple counselling models that can be used to bring about a successful outcome. What the research tends to indicate in this regard is that differences in outcome are better accounted for by common factors than by the specific ingredients of the various models.

For the purposes of this paper, you are required to select one theoretical model from List A (models covered in the course) and one model from List B (other models not directly covered in the course).

|  List A    |  List B   |

|Adlerian Therapy |Existential Therapy |

|Psychoanalytic Therapy |Mindfulness-Based Therapy |

|Gestalt Therapy |Morita Therapy |

|Emotion-Focused Therapy |Multimodal Therapy |

Please note: In Assignment 3, you are required to reflect in depth on one particular model. You may want to read through that assignment before making your selections here. You cannot use the models you select here for Assignment 3.

You are also required to select one of the Client Scenarios as a focus for your paper.

The intent of this paper is to further highlight the ways in which different theories can be applied to the same client, with positive outcomes, so long as the additional common factors are attended to. More specifically, in this paper you will be asked to compare and contrast two counselling models and apply them to a specific client scenario. Please use the structure provided in Column 1 below to organize your paper. Column 2 outlines the scholarly writing guidelines that your instructor will specifically focus on in grading your paper. We intend your mastery of these writing skills to be cumulative – e.g., you must also demonstrate the writing skills identified in column 2 for Assignment 1.

Your paper should be a maximum 15 pages, double-spaced, and must adhere to APA style. You are expected to provide substantive references for both of the theoretical models that you integrate. See the GCAP Scholarly Foundation in Writing for the number of recent, scholarly sources required for a paper of this length.

Your textbook should be used minimally and only for content that reflects Corey’s unique contributions. Corey is considered a secondary source for most information about these theories. You must properly cite and reference all sources, including any course materials or readings you draw on.
