Day 1: Prohibition

Do Now: Read the 18th and 21st amendments and answer the questions that follow. 18th Amendment

Section 1. After one year from the ratification of this article the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors within, the importation thereof into, or the exportation thereof from the United States and all the territory subject to the jurisdiction thereof for beverage purposes is hereby prohibited. Section 2. The Congress and the several States shall have concurrent power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation. Section 3. This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within seven years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.

Day 1 Activity

Webquest: Creating a Cause and Effect Chart on Prohibition Create a cause and effect chart (multi-flow map) on Prohibition. Complete a Webquest, looking up the vocabulary terms below. Then place the words in the appropriate place on the Cause and Effect Chart. Directions:

Use the Internet to look up the vocabulary terms in the table below. Students are encouraged to use the list of suggested websites.

Determine where the words belong on the Cause and Effect Chart Words will either be placed on the "cause" side, or the "effect" side.

Students will come up with a definition for each vocabulary word. The definition must be in their own words. Students may use the table below as a rough draft.

Students may create their chart on Google Drawings (they may use the template provided or create their own), or they may create their chart on paper.
