Lincoln Center of the Arts Middle SchoolPBIS Lesson PlanSubject(s): Stairwell usageObjective(s): Students will be able to show the quickest route to class and explain it in writing.Materials Needed: maps of the building, paper and pensProceduresEngagement: Ask the students which direction is north, and when everyone finally agrees, ask someone to give you directions to another room on your floor using the cardinal directions.Lesson: Hand out maps of the building and have everyone locate your room and the nearest stairwell. Then direct them to find the other 3 stairwells, and talk about their names (stairwell 1, 2, 3, 4) and how to remember them. Next, have the students find various other rooms in the building, gym, art, auditorium, lunchroom, etc. Once everyone seems familiar with the map, have them find a partner. The two will write directions from your room to another location in the building, but they should NOT write down the name of the destination. When they are finished, they should exchange with another group and using the map, they should be able to figure out the destination. Students should focus on giving good directions, using the shortest route, and the most appropriate stairwell.Closure: Discuss the pros and cons of using the most appropriate stairwell. (traffic flow, fights, tardy, etc.)Assessment: Watch to see that students are using the appropriate stairwell when they are in the halls.Reteach: Try dismissing students according to where they are headed and what stairwell they should be using. For example, dismiss all the gym kids first and watch that they all head the same way and the correct way. ................
